LOVEDRUG 11,246
The drone strike was more or less unprovoked. For once, our government vowed to stay out of this. Cyprus doesn't 'host' any British bases. It's two pockets of sovereign British territory. It's not like US bases elsewhere in Europe. Gibraltar, Ceuta or Melilla would be better comparisons. Lucas 31,086
Cyprus is part of the European Union for anyone wondering. Let's see how things will escalate from now... This is probably due to the UK Prime Minister saying that USA can use UK bases and that Iran military bases should be attacked...

Didn't the UK Prime Mininister say that the US can use UK bases and that all Iran bases should be destroyed so that they can't use missiles? Not to defend anyone of course but that's not what I'd call unprovokedย ย It makes sense for Iran to try destroying the base before it's used against them then. The UK allowed the US to use UK bases for defensive purposes, but not for offensive purposes, and the government explicitly made it clear that we're not joining in when it comes to the operation led by the US and Israel. The US military is only permitted to use the bases at Akrotiri and Dhekelia, and the base at Diego Garcia, to repel Iranian attacks, not to launch their own attacks. I'm only asking because Romania had a similar controversy in 1999 where they didn't join NATOs bombing of Yugoslavia, but they allowed their airbases to be used. he/him/his

I see these sovereign UK bases as problematic and colonial legacy. They are different to other US/UK military bases in that they belong to UK, not Cyprus. But, as this example shows, attacks on them can affect the entire island (the island of Cyrus, not UK!!). 'Fun fact': Romania was at the same time supplying Yugoslavia with resources. It's was a ''both sides''-situation, also an opportunity to enhance Romania's chances to join NATO through the optics.ย

Also- to make clear, I don't think Iran is justified to hit UK bases in Cyprus. This opens the way for Iran to hit NATO bases in Greece, Bulgaria, Romania.. the latter cannot even properly defend against Russian drones from the Russian-Ukraine war.ย

I think whats most interesting about Akrotiri and Dhekelia is that the UK actually wanted to withdraw from them in the 70s as they'd lost their value with the loss of the Suez Canal and were expensive to maintain while the UK was fighting in Northern Ireland.ย It was the US that forced the UK to stay because its used by the UK Signals corps and the US didn't want to lose the intelligence having lost access to Turkish intelligence.ย The gays know how to party
