Because he’s probably the most effective communicator in the Dem party right now and will likely have proven to be an incredibly effective mayor by the time that he’s finished his term, given that he’s already gotten the Governor of NY to agree to fund universal childcare statewide, appears to have secured massive union support and housing development funds in collaboration with an adversarial presidential administration, as well as negotiated the release of several activists being held by that same admin, not to mention having handled the recent blizzard like a champ by putting New Yorkers to work to clear the streets and roads. Hell, even Polymarket is taking cues from Mamdani’s interest in fighting food insecurity and fighting for affordability by opening a free grocery store in Astoria. 
 

Running towards the middle is a losing game. Running pols who are effective and deliver on promises that effect the lives of every day people is the only available future if the Dems ever want to win again. People aren’t looking for milquetoast establishment do-nothings who try not to rock the boat (as evidenced by the fact that Dem leadership in Congress’ approval rating is almost as underwater as Trump’s and he’s the most unpopular he’s ever been rn), people want politicians who promise things that help them and deliver. They want politicians that actually believe in something. Nominating a boilerplate establishment Dem is how you lose 2028 in a landslide, not by nominating an effective, principled communicator who actually cares about and fights for working people.

Biden 2020 was a prime example of why, in this moment in time, “running towards the middle” is indeed not a losing game.  Had Biden been in 2020 mental shape in 2024, he would still be president.  À Muslim would 100% lose in a landslide…in 2028.  Years down the road? Who knows?  But dems would be wise to “read the room” before sending out Pete, Kamala, etc this go around.  I’d love to be wrong, but I don’t believe I am.

Biden, by and large, won due to anti-incumbency anger related to the COVID recession and the chaos Trump stoked. No one voted for Biden because they were inspired by him, they voted for him because they were sick of Trump. Also we elected a man named Barack Hussein Obama as president, so I’m not buying the “Harris lost solely because of bigotry” argument. Was that a piece of the puzzle? Probably. But the fact that she’s a fairly inept communicator with no intelligible ideology and no real achievements to campaign on who ran on a boilerplate empty pantsuit platform probably hurt her significantly more than her identity. We need a vision and Americans want a vision and the moderate wing has none other than tinkering on the margins, which won’t win elections.

He wasn't enthusiastically elected by any means and almost provoked a fracture within the party. He was bound to lose and couldn't sustain a functioning coalition. But yeah sure doing the same things over and over again is definitely the answer. This time it'll work out I'm sure.
