Liza Talks Gaga Oscar Moment in New Memoir

I've seen my share of old people not accepting that their health is not that good anymore and getting irritated and frustrated when you have to force them to use these aids for their own good.

Liza might be in a good enough condition to sit in a director's chair, but how hard is it to get her there in safe conditions, on a fast-paced live show?

Liza was obviouly not in a good shape that night. She even wanted to start to sing and appear to not know why she was there. IT is hard to believe it was all due to her not seeing the teleprompter very well.

what i don't understand is why liza went ahead with it anyway? was it a decent paycheck to just suck it up and do as producers say? i would have thought she had the balls to just refuse and leave the moment they denied her request

mother, what must i do?

You do not get paid to present at the Oscars.

i read it more as she was p*ssed she couldn't see the teleprompter properly, and felt a bit infantized by Gaga even if Gaga meant well.

No she was pissed at Gaga.  Full stop. I have to admit, my gut reaction to Gaga that night was that it was performative and a little cringy.

That said, there could also be a bit of Liza trying to save face from an embarrassing moment for her.

so why go ahead with it if they've upset her that much? would she risk being fined or sued?

I am really not sure. Liza was not in a good shape that night. She would not be the First one to walk out Of presenting at the Oscars is for sure.

This seems like one of those moments where both parties saw things through a different perspective and didn't realise the other one was experiencing it differently

I weirdly remember this story being that Gaga also told them something like "don't tell her what to do, she's Liza Minelli" but maybe I had my rose coloured glasses on and was glazing Gaga too much

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I rewatched the clip in full. I wasn't there obviously but here's my read of it.

Liza clearly was infirm (nobody would have discussed any kind of a chair at all otherwise) and muddled (she is visibly shook and mixes her words a lot and looks to Gaga for help at times in obvious panic/confusion).

I doubt very very much that Gaga insisted on the wheelchair. I would speculate that's because of some garbled explanation that was given to Liza at the time as to why that had to happen.

A director's chair wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference to her eye line - she muddled the words either because the situation was too much for her or she is genuinely more cognitively challenged now than she would like to admit.

Gaga's "the public they love you" and "legends" is a bit on the patronising side, although she has to fill time with someone who was clearly flustered. She may also have thought Liza was more infirm than perhaps she is. It was well intentioned.

The "I gotcha" hot mic was clearly not intended to be heard. It's unfair to suggest she was trying to play the hero. She was trying to calm a clearly flustered woman on stage on a live show.

I think it's conceivable that an infirm woman with a great sense of self dignity was thrown into a spin at short notice before going on stage which may have made her seem more muddled than she otherwise would have been.

Let's remember these events move quickly and that might have thrown an infirm woman paranoid about her public image even more.

I've experience of folk with dementia and cognitive decline in older years and they can be extremely paranoid and defensive about their sense of independence and health and are sensitive to being belittled as the "old dear". It's not that uncommon.

The internet is saying Gaga used this moment to be seen as the nice hero and she is always faking the kindness persona.

you know what? I totally doubt that is how it happened…but if this gets Gaga to stop being so toxically nice all the time and gets her to actually speak the **** up again about things more aggressively, I’m here for it.

there is a fine line between “protecting your mental health by healing emotionally” and honestly just dipping out on who you really are on the inside because it’s just easier. Especially when there is a genocide happening. She definitely phoned in her Grammys speech on “women in the boys club” (which seemed a little weird to randomly bring up when you are the most powerful pop star in dance pop and there is a plethora of female DJs and producers you could have worked with), when she could have just deliberately said **** Ice and Free Palestine like we wanted.

don’t get me wrong…I am not one of the crazies who thinks she is a Zionist…but she is playing it very safe this era considering her history and I think it’s ruining her legacy with younger people a little bit because it comes off that she is not really innovative or never was and that she was really just trying to be edgy.

which again…I know she was forward thinking- but now it comes off that she isn’t but she is just phoning it in.

she used to have audacity. It feels toooo nice girl now. And I doubt it is just to protect her mental health. Nobody is that much of a saint 99% of the time. Speak the **** up. People actually do want their pop stars to stand up. Ignore the republicans who say otherwise. Be a real progressive.

Michael Feinstein, who happens to be her close friend, did an interview when this happened and said she was shaken off by production telling her she couldn’t use the directors chair and that’s why she seemed off, so I find it weird how now it’s all because of Gaga and because she couldn’t read. There’s videos of her walking into a stage that same year and she had to have two people helping her slowly walk on stage so it’s not crazy to think production was concerned and didn’t want to have anything bad happen to her on live tv

The worst thing queer people ever did was allow our informal language to be gentrified because WHY are major publications using the word “shade” in their headlines. When it also isn’t shade because it’s direct… which is not shade…

  • Squidward T changed the title to Liza Minnelli claims Gaga embarrassed her on purpose.
