Performative or not, we all need to be against ICE and the DHS for their blatant lies and character assassination of Good and Pretti. This is about solidarity and pressuring them to back the **** down. 
 

Edit: and not only that, Americans cannot let this go. The agents who killed Good and Pretti need to be criminally prosecuted and so does anyone involved in obstruction of justice.

I brought this point up in another thread, people expect perfectionism and if it doesn’t fit their narrative perfectly they attack sadly and I think that’s why celebrities now are more strategic about their activism. That and also if the last 10 years has proved anything it’s that celebrity activism isn’t gonna help or stop horrid politicians getting in power or horrid things happening, actually holding politicians accountable is what people need to do.

And if time passes and nothing happens when she goes back to America and doesn’t use her public appearances as a way to advocate, I too will raise an eyebrow in not taking the opportunity to speak out, especially since she is touring Minnesota, so there’s no reason she should avoid it. But I think this situation is still very raw and escalating every day, and I wouldn’t want to say something definitive in case in the scenario that she is planning to reach out in some capacity soon. I’m not defending silence, I’m just retroactively looking deeper into times she has spoken about issues and there have been people within the fan base that don’t have the capacity to take it seriously or consider it not doing enough, which is a foolish mentality.

I understand what everyone is saying in this thread and others when they say this is just performative, but also, performances are still impactful. Sure, the main purpose of performative acts is to assuage dissenters, but it can also have the added benefit of boosting morale. Like when a conservative activist invokes the name of God and Jesus - we know they don't really believe it in because their actions don't reflect it, but their followers become emboldened, and even go on to act in the activist's will. Despite the intent, the results of performative behaviors are more far-reaching than you might think.

Lack of performance, likewise, can have a sedating effect. Many younger people and those who are less likely to think critically look to celebrities parasocially for cues on what they should care about. So if the celebrity or influencer they follow doesn't make a big deal of it, why should they? You may not like that a large portion of the public behaves like this, but that doesn't mean they don't.

To that end, the criticism of performativity shouldn't be "it's not worth doing at all if you don't mean it", but "thank you, and what else can you contribute?" It's the bare-minimum, but it is something.
