That’s my thing with people talking about her voice being “different” sometimes: it’s all a matter of technique, placement etc. She has classic musical theatre technique where she can basically create completely different stylized and, often, genre-specific “character voices” just by changing things like placement, vowel shape, larynx position etc. so sometimes when fans are like “oh wow, her voice is completely different!” it’s like…no, she’s just using it differently. I fully think she could do the same tone quality she had in 2005-2006 (brighter, lighter) and sing in that same register (à la Captivated/Electric Kiss) and just chooses to do it differently for a lot of her material.

Kind of a rant and OT. Not so much directed at you as a general comment lol

Okay I have opinions on this! I agree with everything you said... but I also do think her voice has changed slightly over the years from smoking. BUT I do think it's changed back a little more the past few years since she quit. When she sung Summerboy for example I was like omg it actually sounds very close to her TF era vocals. But I swear to you if she did that a few years ago, even using her TF era techniques and placement, it still would've sounded slightly different

Also you can definitely hear it in her talking voice! A few years ago (maybe it was House Of Gucci or Joker 2 era) I tried pitching her voice up and was shocked that she sounded exactly like her younger self. Then pitched her TF era talking voice down and she sounded just like the current her. But more recently when I hear her talk normally I also think "oh wow she's getting her old voice back"

I think it's a combination of all of the above, and its subtle, but quitting cigarettes has had a huge positive impact on her voice. I mean she sounds better than ever during the Mayhem era!

I agree that she’s definitely been in poorer form at different points in her career (2019-2022 was pretty rough, imo) and I think it’s deffo a combination of things. I could see cigs making her voice a bit huskier, I also think some of the lack of vocal coordination was a certain degree of deconditioning, but I think a big (somewhat under discussed factor) is mental health.
 

When someone’s struggling with PTSD, it disrupts a lot of the really delicate things that make versatile vocal coordination possible, both mentally and physically. Even chronic migraines alone can be incredibly problematic for vocal production because they create facial tightness, throat tightness, chest and shoulder tension etc. Now add chronic dissociation and triggers that probably center around performance and you have a perfect storm for longstanding, chronic vocal issues. 

But, like you said, really happy she’s healthier, happier, and handling her voice much better and seeming to really love performing again ♥️
