bim 514
I feel like part of the beauty of Mayhem is less about the actual lyrics themselves and more about the intention and energy behind the words. To use this song as an example, it’s the difference in how she sings ‘but I’m gonna fight the feeling instead’ in each pre-chorus. She’s said something along the lines of Mayhem being the story of a night out, and on this track it’s like you can hear her getting smacked with memories of a painful loss of love and how that intensity actually builds as she drowns herself in alcohol instead of numbing it like she expects it to. And even in that chaotic mix of feelings she’s still aware of the pain it caused her because it left a such bad taste in her mouth so she decides to dance through the pain instead. Of course this story has been told before by other artists, even by Gaga. I love hearing it through the lens of who she is as a human and artist at this point in her life though. You can really *feel* this album in a way her previous work hasn’t touched yet. She also said herself she did things with her voice on this album she’s never done before, I always heard that statement as her really digging deep in the gut to sing. Like that ghoulish ‘I can be your antidote tonight’ at the end of the second chorus of Disease. She needed to really let go to sing like that. Also, genuine question for those who don’t like this song, have you ever experienced heartbreak from a lover? 2

I ended a five year relationship a few weeks before Mayhem and this song hit me like a bag of bricks on the first listen.

Everyone praises it but the vocal effect on her voice during the chorus is just very weird and off. The lyrics are mid at best. I feel people only like it because of the LoveDrug to Applause transition at the MAYHEM Ball. The transition had me shook but it was only because LoveDrug ended and it had an outfit reveal and transition into Applause. I would even rank Killah, Don’t Call Tonight, and The Beast above this mess. Is there anyone else that doesn’t like this song? This is not a song I frequently listen to but I love each time I hear it, primarily because of the energy I felt the first time hearing it and the way it took me back to a certain feel. And props to those who still have it on repeat and get that high out of it, I don't and so have to space it to the point it comes on once in a while on a certain driving playlist or I look forward to hearing it live again! I do sometimes go back and watch a live video because her vocals crush it when live on that song. And while the transition is dope, I separate my love for that music transition and love for the song. At the end of the day, LoveDrug is a somewhat simple yet nicely done pop song that can get very old very fast, but can really hit when its the right time!
SevenWonder 4,523
I think if you've ever had someone you really loved, broken up, moved on (or so you thought), but then that person suddenly enters your mind and you can't stop thinking about them/missing them? The song hits. Yes, the subject's been done millions of times. That's because we've all been there. And I think the lyrics in the verses are sharp, poignant and honest. I concede the chorus is basic, but the emotion behind it is not. It's universal. It's also the best Mayhem song to drive to, that's for sure. I love it. Anderson123 40,162
I love the song and it’s such a nice sound that I enjoy from the album. I don’t love it as much as the first half that comes before it but it’s a needed break from the adrenaline. There are no bad songs on Mayhem!
