The double standard of Terry Richardson

Old tea but did anybody point out the double standard Gaga faced from the DWUW music video, specifically from working with Terry Richardson

It was really unfair to crucify her from working with him when just in November of 2013 he directed Miley Cyrus’s Wrecking Ball and it was an absolute hit and nobody even mentioned or cared about him directing the music video of such a popular song

PS I just got to know that XO by Beyoncé which came out in December of 2013 (around the same time DWUW was supposed to release) is directed by Terry Richardson too :enigma: well nobody canceled Bey at the time

this just proves that when an artist has a hating streak, every little detail just adds to the stake they are being burned

I agree. However, I would add that the Wrecking Ball video DID get some backlash in the media for showing unnecessary nudity and sexualization

No one cares about the Beyonce Diddy song, still on streaming, no one cares about Justin Bieber having a song w R Kelly released in 2013, among many others, etc. Gaga just gets more heat

I actually didn't know about Terry Richardson also doing XO and Wrecking Ball, but I agree 100%. The only thing is that Lady Gaga had him and R Kelly combined, which was probably a lot. That plus the public not fully understanding the meaning behind "Do What U Want with my body", which had another meaning deeper than the surface level one.

I think this explains what was going on in the heads of people at the time pretty well. People saw Gaga was making a music video with an unsavory character and directed by another. I feel that the meaning behind DWUW went over a lot of people's heads, the GP included. They just assumed that because of the line, "Do what you want with my body," the song couldn't possibly be about anything more than sex.

I think people forget that the backlash came from how involved Gaga was with Terry.

Like he didn't just direct a music video, at the time they were friends. They worked together on more than just a music video and for a number of years and had a strong relationship.

So ofc she copped more flack than Miley & the wrecking ball video (which got plenty of critique) or anyone who did a project or 2 with him.

Maybe it’s just me but it also feels like it’s the women who took the most heat in these situations.

I also love how everyone responding to this thread shared an interesting and different point of view and it feels like they’re all valid bits of explanation for what happened. I think it shows the complexity of all of this.

maybe one of the differences was that the DWUW video appeared to glorify abuse, and the wrecking ball video wasn't about SA at all?

Honestly, her own fans created this big buzz around Gaga x Terry, if only they stfu and let her deal with it quietly behind the scenes, nobody would have make such a fuss about it.

The fans wanted her to say something, to apologized, to be this perfect human being they created in their mind.

Terry pretty much fell off after 2013

dwuw caught a second wave of heat around 18/19 with the r kelly documentary (or trial? can't remember) and gaga was campaigning for those awards, the song was still available until then which is why she's the main one punished for it

I don't think anybody knows who directs music videos outside of music fanatics, i couldn't tell you who directed thriller or even pokerface lol

mother, what must i do?

I believe he also filmed the Born This Way Ball & artRAVE documentaries that never got released?
