holy scheisse 22,553
The negative: it came at such a horrible turning point in American politics. We descend into far right politics while lady gaygay serves THIS?! (Not her fault she couldn’t have known) it was depressing af and this album was not just watching Gaga grieve but also grieving as her fans when she started to deconstruct who we knew her to be. Just felt like my country was unrecognizable and so was my role model at the same time The positive: it added dimension to her discography so I appreciate. Up to this point she didn’t really have many songs that could make me cry (aside from like speechless, marry the night, hair and dope). Ya best believe that Joanne, million raisins, angel down and even perfect illusion had me crying.
PornoDanceFight 940
Hey Girl is such a stellar song and I’ve never understood the near decade of slander it’s received by this fanbase! Literally me and my girl friends sing the chorus at each other when we’re goofing around while drunk. Diamond Heart doesn’t do anything for me. It used to, but there’s something about the production/pacing of the song where, to me, it’s supposed to go “faster,” but just doesn’t really go anywhere? It’s not that the production’s flat, but it sounds like it’s meant to be this big opener moment but just sits there, energy wise. JAD is literally in her top 20 songs at the very least. I think naming the album “Sinner’s Prayer” would have made its themes feel a bit more rounded out, and we’d stop having debates about why she named it after Joanne, etc. Edited January 10 by PornoDanceFight

I never read it as being judgy or high horse-y as much as I thought she was trying to wake up some latent compassion from people who weren’t engaged + protesting and vindicating people who were. 53 minutes ago, Ziggy said: I’ll say I’m a little biased bc I was working in organizing at the time and pretty young so I think I was predisposed to being a little more sensitive about people’s well-meaning projections (ain’t that being young and petulant lol) on situations they weren’t immediately involved in seeing other people around me doing REALLY direct, invested work. To be fair, the song was specifically inspired by Trayvon Martin's death where he was racially profiled and attacked. Only one guy tried to end the confrontation and as he was calling the police, Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon. Then Zimmerman was acquitted and hasn't served a day in jail. Angel Down isn't so much about "nobody's paying attention", it's more like "the people in power just don't care". Hence "where are our leaders?". I've always heard it as less personal and self insertive and more of a call to action for institutional change. ¡Seguimos aquí! 1
27monster27 15,098
Hey Girl is amazing. This album was never intended as a "career saver" like Bedtime Stories. Lady Gaga needed to leave the pop star part of her behind due to trauma and she was always inspired by people like Bruce Springsteen, so this album checks out. Also, Lady Gaga choosing to make a country album is actually one of her more experimental moves. he/him/his
steven 6,340
I find this album unlistenable and depressing. I never ever listen to it, never was a fan. John Wayne is the only song I like tho.
Controversiaga 12,635
Hey girl is one of the best songs on that album Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”
Stamos 217
- Although I love Perfect Illusion, Diamond Heart should have been the lead single. It has that epic stadium song feel and although it is very demanding vocally, it is more doable live than Perfect Illusion - Joanne the song is a no for me personally, but I think that the piano version is MILES ahead of the official album one - Hey Girl can rot - Just Another Day is such a fun song and it also has such an eerie vibe to it, given the fact that it could be easily played in a movie exactly when everything is falling apart in an apocalyptic scene and the lunatic bad guy vibes to it at the same time
