Unpopular opinion: Joanne

It's my favorite album and a lot of her fans weren't (and still aren't) mature enough to understand the project's soul.

"Why is there a song about masturbation on an album about her aunt?"

"The dead aunt album!"

You're dumb, sorry  it's no wonder people with such poor comprehension skills prefer albums where she flat out says "I'm sad" over a generic club beat that they can shake their gay asses to while they pretend to be mentally ill 'cause it's fashionable

Maybe that's too harsh but some Gaga stans irk me sometimes :icant:

Anywayyyyy

The parallels she draws between the way she deifies her aunt, how Joanne was a consistent presence in her life despite never meeting her (her grandparents and dad mourning her and keeping her memory alive), how the pain of her death changed her dad into a new person, generational grief, how her art inspired Gaga to go for it, and how Joanne died at 19 and 19 is when Gaga really decided to chase the life of an artist. Hell, Gaga was even named after her.

"Where do you think you're going?" was just as much about Gaga as it was about Joanne.

Mayhem might be her most enjoyable listening experience but Joanne is BY FAR her most personal, thoughtful, honest, and beautiful body of work.

And that, my friends, is a hill I'll truly die on :diane:

DH is one of her worst songs

Joanne is beautiful live

DIC shouldn't be on the album

To honor John Wayne with a song is an homophobic slap to her fans

Angel Down is beautiful but it's position on the tracklist is wrong, it should be among the first 5 songs on the album.

The album cover was a mistake and because of it everyone see this album as a Country album, but it's only Country influence, but in the wrong way.

Sinner's Prayer could have been amazing if she ditched he yee-haw, the Country music stereotypes that are dropped here and there on the album and forces it to be "Country influenced", with no real reason.

Joanne is more mayhem than Mayhem but in all the wrong ways, Mayhem managed to be cohesive and put the chaos in the music, in order.. while Joanne is just jumping from genre to genre, from upbeat to a ballad, to a sexual song and then a psychedelic attempt and so on.. it's all over the place.

But yet.. after the concert, I revisited the album and it starts to grow on me and I'm starting to understand it.. mostly..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

As a fan of country/blues/americana/soft rock, this album was super disappointing.

She just really had nothing to add to the genres she decided to play with and lacked enough experience with the genres to do anything interesting with them.

And her vocal tone in this era was just not my personal taste.

There's some relatively good moments, John Wayne gets a lot of spins from me. But generally I skip this, if I want the vibe of the genres Joanne lives in I have way better options to choose.

Just another day is one of her best songs and she should make a full album with this kind of sound.

Perfect Illusion is one of her best lead singles, and the video is really good.

The original version of Joanne is better than the piano version.

The final version of Angel Down is way better than the work tape, the production is amazing and fits the song.

Million Reasons was not overplayed live, not more than her other successful singles, you guys just decided you hated the song because it wasn't the Gaga you wanted.

It's very weird that so many fans were put off by this album and don't consider it a Gaga album. Do you even know who you're stanning? Have you ever listened to the music she was doing before being famous, to get where she comes from?

If that album vanished, nothing would change in my life.

How is this an unpopular opinion? You just sound like half the people on GagaDaily.

I’m sure this is a common opinion. Hell, I love Joanne and I think Come To Mama sounds like a Christmas song!

No! Not everyone loves it but it seems to get more love than many songs!

Including from myself! In fact, PI’s release was the day I finally joined this cult site rather than lurking like a creep!

I was modded just before PI came out :diane: like, the week between the teaser and the song's release :diane:

Perfect Illusion is her best lead single, and the best song off of Joanne. The promo strategy for it sucked tho - “social media commentary”, MV not dropping same day (would’ve gone top 10 at the time), no performances or promo. It didn’t deserve to be forgotten the way it is…

The album needed a more rock edge - like Diamond Heart or A-YO are the direction the album should’ve gone in.

I don’t hate the album. It reminds me of a period of time in my life and I played the CD over and over and over in my car for months on end.

No excuse however, for the music videos to be so low budget and lame :rip:

John Wayne didn’t deserve MV treatment.

No. It’s her best lead single and her best song.

Spoiler

Technically I consider DWUW feat You Know Who her best song but since it’s scrubbed off the face of the earth… :icant:

It was during Joanne era I discovered Gaga and became a little monster shortly after. I'm truly flabbergasted when I'm learning how unpopular Joanne is to the fan base. It is lyrically and vocally one of her best works.

However I do wish she explored the sounds of Diamond Heart, A-YO, John Wayne, Dancing in Circles more, especially in the second half of the album. Those songs are the best in the album.

Dancing in Circles is my most favourite song in the album although it's hilarious this song exists in Joanne, maybe the album is also about the private activities of Stefani Joanne Germanotta, rather than just Joanne Germanotta.

Come To Mama and Angel Down are some of the best written songs in her career. Probably the only people who hate Come To Mama are little complainers.

The album version of Joanne is far better than its piano version. I do like the piano version but it's too slow and I adore the production of the album version.

Sinner's Prayer is my least favourite song from Joanne. I find its chorus a bit underwhelming and bring the vibe down especially after how the verses are building up.

Perfect Illusion may not be the best choice for a lead single when songs like A-YO and John Wayne exist, but it's still one of the highlights of the album and deserved more love.

Joanne might not have been as successful as her other albums but it truly rebranded her image as a serious artist whether the fan base likes it or not. It was an important transitional album to A Star is Born era.

A-YO is one of the best songs

Her Dope vocals only work in the title track

The album cover is a serve, iconic af

She really didn’t seem to like Perfect Illusion despite saying 24/7 that she loved it

She blantantly lied when she said the NFL gave her the Super Bowl after hearing the album, there’s literally no way:deadbanana: They don’t even care about the quality of the artists’ music, they just want the hits

She didn’t shade Madonna at all or even implied Madonna didn’t write/produced her music when she said “I write all my songs, I play a lot of instruments” etc., she just meant to say that it’s HER work

Diamond Heart, Jown Wayne and Perfect Illusion are like the “worst” tracks from the album

Hey Girl is reaaaaally good, one of her best produced songs ever

There is no “original LG5” with “dark dance music” or whatever, it’s just that she didn’t have a clear vision of Joanne yet, but it was always gonna be toned down

She abandoned RedOne only because she feared facing “thank you RedOne” comments, but RedOne should have stayed on the album and Angel Down’s quality was really diluted by Mark Ronson

I love the album but fans need to stop pretending it has won a Grammy. It just factually has not. She won a Grammy for her vocal performance on a track that isn’t on the album. The song itself wasn’t awarded.

The album wasn’t successful enough to be a major cause of her rebranding as a talented musician. Cheek To Cheek (album, tour and tribute era) and A Star Is Born were way more important than Joanne in her career trajectory. If anything, Million Reasons (that song ALONE) helped her.

She could’ve honored her new trajectory as a serious musician without neglecting the quality of the music videos, which she really did. Actually, the album would’ve left the fans a much better memory.
