Yeah, I think social/political studies people put the "this person is out of touch completely" limit around 300 million these days. That's the amount of money where consequences disappear and you can't relate to real people anymore.

Billionaire status just seemed like the cleaner break to me but I side-eye anyone who's ultra wealthy until I have real contempt for them.

And beyond that, KEEPING that kind of fortune while millions struggle just to survive is purely sociopathic, antisocial, and heartless.

You can't idolize someone like that.

You can like the music, you can even go to the shows, but that celebrity is no longer someone to look up to.

well gaga and michael are worth 900 million so should we stop stanning her? yall seem to be forgetting gaga is a capitalist queen - shes never been shy about making money off more than just her music? remember nertec? shes worked with 30+ brands and has haus labs, shes never been a "i only wanna make money of pure music" kinda gal. shes currently on tour which is going to gross 200+ million. in fact some can argue gaga is one of the most business savvy pop stars out rn - if haus labs popped off like fenty did, gaga would for sure be a billionaire all by herself. haus labs just never got as big as fenty, but gaga's intention was there.

I stopped stanning a while ago for a few reasons :poot: mostly that I'm 30 now, not 15, and I don't have the mental space to place that kind of value/obsession on a (living) celebrity. I don't really think she wants obsessive fans anymore anyway.

Literally the only reason I'm still here is 'cause I like our little community. Getting some good music every couple years is a nice bonus too and her shows are fun to go to with people I love.

If it weren't for the nostalgia factor and the Monsters, Gaga probably wouldn't even be on my radar these days beyond casual listening

It's a complicated topic to discuss 'cause people get bent out of shape about things and they take your words and extrapolate something entirely different lmao.

i mean being worth 300 million can also only be done by exploitation and oppression, **** anything over 10 million means u have to exploit others and the system

the second she toured and made 200 million from the monster ball she was already make more money than anyone should have

It's a well known fact that the Monster Ball bankrupted her and left her $3 million in the hole.

Tour gross for new artists doesn't equal their take home paycheck. It's the total income pre-tax of the tour. It's only later in a career that artists are able to negotiate bigger take home %s, especially if its done via a self owned label/management company.

And yeah, obscene levels of wealth are obtained via obscene means. And you can see how that wealth has weakened the Gaga we fell in love with back in 2008. The blatant price gouging of fans, the overpriced poor quality merch, the silence on political issues etc.

It's so funny people going hard against the idea of a billionaire popstar but then they become soft and create excuses for the politicians left or right that keep allowing it to happen

Who’s doing that? You know a lot of Gavin Newsom fans on this site? Lol

To be honest, I don't support her now lmao. I still like her music and music videos and I like her as a person, but I don't feel a need to "support" someone who can buy my entire city block, y'know?

I think I would still always like her and have good memories kind of thing of seeing her as a goddess and her music/performances.

But feeling emotionally invested in her...  ah not really.  Her concert tickets even for the Mayhem Ball it wasn't a thought... I wasn't going to be inconvenienced for it.

I've always found it unfair the level of wealth she and her peers are able to achieve compared to hard working people who make minimum wage or less. 100m or 500m or 1b isn't going to change my opinion of that. But I don't see who she would be exploiting if she gets to 1b that would make her as unethical as billionnaires in like the fashion or food industry. I do hope she donates a big part of her fortune

I don't know and I don't really care about the money... billions... Music not the bling... Yeah talk about a paradox... Anyway, billions or not Gaga's voice is a spear that drives always straight through my heart and make me weak at my knees. I can't do anything against it. Now let's see what she does with her money. More and more overpriced stuff or gigs ? Anyway. Even if I think it's not ok and I'm eager to see her stay in the lane of what we were used to in a matter of, being a good person... Finally she can harvest all the billions she wants as long as she'll still make me cry when she sings for the rest of my days.

Late to the party but I got a diamond heart

The only way is up!

I can at least say she’d be a billionaire who earned all her money from the bottom grind up.

also, Gaga is an artist, which is entertainment and a luxury, so her business isn’t one that’s directly exploiting her consumers and employees. A lot of the ppl working for her are following their dreams. Obviously I know there’s working class ppl behind the tours and stuff, but that’s more her label, and companies like live nation vs her as an individual.

its the billionaires behind heath care, care insurance, warfare and other essential business that really don’t sit right with me while they profit billions from vulnerable people who are dying and literally modern day blood suckers. At least we have a choice to purchase her music or not vs shelling out our life savings for medicine/ surgeries to keep us alive and healthy

Considering I own about 20 physical copies of each of her albums (not counting vinyl :cryga:) yes. But, if she were to become one of those evil billionaires, I’d have to say something. She and Michael are both philanthropists so hopefully we won’t have anything to worry about, lol.

I get the “not stanning” thing because I honestly don’t really “stan” anyone, but if we’re taking the parasocial component and emotional investment of “stanning” out of it: then what difference does the amount of money someone has make if you’re just listening to the music? That’s the part I’m confused by lol. It’s valid that it gives you the ick ig, but I just feel like this line of reasoning doesn’t really make sense.

Also: no shade, but MJ was worth more than Gaga is now when he died :reductive:

It becomes just music I like and is no longer "the beautiful soul that created the music"

Eh, he spent his entire career giving and doing for others. Buying houses for families, using his global network to find organs for sick kids, gave over half his wealth to charity in his lifetime, entire world tour profits went to charity, and he still managed to live a life of luxury.

That's how you do it

There's more to being a fan than just listening to the music in this era though - its the merch, the physical copies, the tour tickets etc.

Like I'm with you, I'm a grown adult I don't stan for anyone. Not even the ones I did as a teen. But like when it comes to bands and singers I like, their wealth and their actions impact what limits I set myself as a fan.

I'd never buy bootleg merch of any of the indie bands I follow, I always preorder their upcoming physicals, go to as many shows as possible (which tbf is for me as well lol), support their side projects etc. Things that actively help them.
But with big acts? I will buy bootlegs because its significantly cheaper and often better quality, I'll skip preorders, I'll skip tours (there's some older acts I'll only see if they do hits tours/album anniversary tours) etc.

And the logic is purely - I'd rather invest and support the ones who need it to continue vs the ones where i'm an insignificant drop in the very big pond.
