Trump just pardoned a convicted narco-president from Honduras last month :rip:

The difference is they want Venezuela’s oil.

And they're willing to throw Venezuela into chaos to get it

@Fernster7What’s sad about that? Lmao. They laid out a bunch of baseless charges in an already legally precarious framework (charging a foreign citizen/leader). The US court system has already adjudicated that there is no compelling evidence that the cartels are working for Maduro against the United States and the nature of the statement alone (the top LEO in the country using overtly political rhetoric as justification for the charges) already poisons the well by exhibiting prejudice, which is antithetical to presumption of innocence, which is the basis of due process. That’s how the law works. Unfortunately, this administration is more interested in theatre and using our institutions as scenery and props in that cheap theatre.

This is not to say that I think Maduro is a good guy, but these charges specifically strike me as being bogus and, if he’s to be deposed, it’d be better if it were done internally as opposed to being done by a foreign nation with exploitative interests.

Saw a professor of Latin American studies saying people should celebrate with caution.

Two things can be true:

Maduro is a criminal who an illegitimate dictator

and

US invading countries and starting regime change is bad

Most smart people can juggle these two thoughts in their heads

People who cheer this on because they dislike Maduro are knowingly cheering on the bombing of innocent civilians and basking in it at worst and are mis-informed at best. The US will just install a right wing dictatorship in the place of the current Maduro admin. We talk a big game about how much we love promoting democracy abroad but we never actually follow through on it.

The US will not be the savior of the Venezuelan people, they're not even the saviors of their own citizens.

This f*cking part.

As if the US cares about the quality of Venezuelans' lives. Our leaders just want a beneficial deal and Maduro was being a punk.

Not a shred of altruism or justice in this.

I only sad reacted because I would take anything that makes him rot in jail. And everybody here knows most of those charges are true, although not exactly targeted at the US (maybe).

And yes, we all know it would be better if it was handled internally, but if you really know Venezuela’s situation you’d understand that without foreign intervention this regime will never fall.

Monsters never die.

I think the only positive US intervention in Latin America was Panama. Someone correct me if wrong.

Tbf, his statement about Sheinbaum and Mexico is all over the place. On the one hand, he said, “She’s great, we have a great relationship” etc etc and then he said she’s too soft on cartels, but that there was no specific plan to do anything in Mexico.

I’ve stopped discussing politics with most people irl cause they can’t hold two thoughts in their heads and are largely ignorant on history.

At least on here and Twitter many people are more willing to have actual discussions.

All of my Venezuelan friends are celebrating and I told one why we must celebrate with caution and they weren’t having it :rip:

WELP, they can enjoy today but the reality is still to be seen. Hopefully it’s good, but these are things that have to be analyzed and thought out imo.

Yeah it felt inevitable that someone within government would seek to use Trump to take power.
