From what I've read, a bunch of American (and European) cooperations built the infrastructure to extract oil and gas from Venezuela. Then, the Venezuelan government decided they wanted to be in charge of their own resources. Which is their right tbh. That was literally decades ago. The 60s or something. But now, Trump and Miller are making the claim that the US owns that infrastructure, therefore we own the oil, so we're "taking it back". The US government itself was never a part of it aside from dealing with the import/export and taxes side of the deal. I mean it isn't a coincidence. But I think conspiracy downplays whats actually happened. The world, certainly the western world, has always run on the social contract. As a result of the dot com bubble collapse and the sub prime mortgage crash, the social contract got broken and successive governments globally have failed or chosen not to rebuild the contract. And this is what is fuelling the rise of populism. The right are capitalising on it because they're more organised and better communicators.
