Sittin' over here, starin' in your face
With lust in my eyes, sure don't give a damn
And ya don't know that I've been dreamin'
Of ya in my fantasy
Never once you looked at me
Don't even realize that I'm wantin' you to fulfill my needs
Think what you want, let your mind free
Run free to a place no one dares to

How many nights I've laid in bed excited over you?
I've closed my eyes and thought of us a hundred different ways
I've gotten there so many times, I wonder how 'bout you
Day and night, night and day, all I've got to say is

If I was your girl, oh, the things I'd do to you
I'd make you call out my name, I'd ask who it belongs to
If I was your woman, the things I'd do to you
But I'm not, so I can't, then I won't, but if I was your girl

I’m surprised this one doesn’t get more praise around here, especially considering how much people love “Bops”

Although If did come in first place in a Janet megarate a while back.

I feel like her Discography gets slept on in general.

This song and video were soooooo ahead of their time.  I remember being floored when this came out.  U have to consider that up until 1993, when the “Janet.” album came out, Janet did not have a sexy, girly image in the least.  All throughout 1989’s Rhythm Nation era, a mega successful album and her statement that she was far beyond just MJ’s little sister trying to ride his coattails, she was always covered head to toe in black (pants and jackets) straight black hair, and just kind of a beautiful tomboy. Madonna, Paula Abdul and others were the sexy girly ones.  NO ONE thought that was Janet’s lane at all, nor did we expect it from her.  So I remember turning to MTV one afternoon, and That’s the Way Love Goes video was on - I actually had no idea who it was for a good minute - she looked COMPLETELY different and just absolutely gorgeous. Then after TTWLG ruled that summer (8 weeks at #1 Billboard Hot 100), she released “If,” and I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing.  It was so innovative, sexual, and the dancing - my God.  I believe every little gay boy in America learned that breakdown.

To put this change into perspective, it’d be like if Britney never had a sexual image in the least and was completely buttoned up for the first 7 years of her career, then released the video for “I’m a Slave For You.”  It was just a music/pop culture moment - the cherry on top was the famous Rolling Stone cover that accompanied the era - iconic to say the least.

GovernmentHookah

One of her best songs, one of the best choreography (thanks to Tina Landon), one of her best music videos, and one of my personal favorite VMA performance ever
