I do like jazz. I grew up listening to a lot of the classics, especially Ella Fitzgerald, but I can genuinely say Gaga has opened me up to really enjoying Jazz, and it’s a genre which has been in regular listening rotation for me now for some years.

This is so cool! Did your father teach you to play the saxophone?

For me the enjoyment was immediate, the album resonated with me right away! I think my favorite is Silver Lighting. And I loved Lover Girl and Mr. Eclectic and their bossa nova inspired style!

My dad didn't teach me saxophone because French Horn came natural for me.  When I was a young kid someone left a French Horn in our house for my Dad to deliver to someone he was going to see the next day.  My Dad was downstairs in the studio giving lessons.  I discovered the French Horn and started playing with it.  I experimented and learned how to finger notes on the scale, then started playing some very simple songs.  When my Dad came upstairs he asked my Mom "who was playing the horn?"  My Mom said it's your son.  My Dad did not play French Horn so he arranged for me to take lessons from another teacher.  I played horn thorough elementary school, Jr. high, HS when I also played in a local symphony orchestra, and continued through college.

When I was young my Dad was jamming all night with his friends down in the studio.  They played jazz standards and improvisational jazz.  I showed up in my pajamas to watch them play.  They asked me to join them on the horn.  I told them I can't play jazz.  It's true, you have to have a knack for jazz to play it.  I love jazz but can't play it.   I love that Gaga sings jazz so well.  The has that knack.  She is so multitalented.

Just watched the MV for Silver Lining.  It's very good.  Thanks for pointing the song out.

Wonderful!  Happy for you.  And Ella is so amazing.  I think it's great that Gaga extends her influence beyond pop music.

I love Gaga’s style blending jazz and “vintage pop” with some gospel and rock thrown in the mix. I also LOVE Eva Cassidy so that makes sense I guess.

My New Year’s resolution is to expand my listening catalog. I mostly listen to pop or pop adjacent. But each week, I’m going to listen to a different genre, the must-hear classics, “today’s hits”, and maybe find some pop-genre bending songs as well. Ive started with jazz. I enjoy everything I’ve listened to so far. Previously, have been interested only in Gaga and Laufey

Oh right! I remember you telling me once about playing the French horn. Your childhood seems to have been magical!

I also think that playing jazz isn't for everyone, you must have a knack for it!

Glad you liked Silver Lining, it has such a beautiful melody and I really like how it blends classic jazz with pop elements.

I had a knack for playing French horn, but not for playing jazz.

Eva Cassidy's cover of Songbird is beautiful.  Thanks for sharing.
