Paramount Decided Avatar Movie Will Skip Theatrical Release & Straight To Paramount+

The upcoming feature The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will bypass a theatrical debut in theaters in October 2026 and premiere exclusively on Paramount+ as the streamer becomes the exclusive home of all animated content from Avatar Studios, the creative force behind the beloved Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Ditto for the new series Avatar: Seven Havens. Both animated projects are being produced Avatar Studios, which was formed in 2021 under Nickelodeon as a division designed to create a new universe based on the worlds of Avatar and subsequent series The Legend of Korra.

Based on the original series Avatar: The Last Airbender created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the feature film will be directed by Lauren Montgomery with Steve Ahn and William Mata co-directing. Latifa Ouaou, Maryann Garger, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino serve as producers. Award-winning composer Jeremy Zuckerman returns to score both the film and series.

The inherently progressive nature of that universe is clearly a splinter in the Ellison’s foot, and being the conservative bullies that they are, they will want to bury that as much as possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if they even start interfering in the production or threaten to cut fundings if changes aren’t made. This is absolutely despicable.

I mean hasn't this happened already? The amount of projects and world building they wanted to do since over half a decade, yet literally nothing came off it. Opening Avatar Studios and being tied to Paramount was probably the biggest mistake they made.
