StrawberryBlond 15,056
Ordinarily, I would agree. Especially because retail playlists playing the same songs for hours over and over everyday for a month is a massive generator of their chart success. Perhaps if there could be a way of blocking out the stuff coming from businesses as regards chart data? The artists still get paid, basically, but it won't count towards chart position. But the problem is, what if there's a brand new, amazing Christmas song, why shouldn't it be allowed to chart? If Gaga put out an original Christmas song (something I hope she will do eventually) and it's a beloved hit, surely we'd want it to be at the top of the general charts? Why should it never be regarded as an "official" #1 and only be a hit on a specific Christmas chart that no one cares about? I think there's definitely some unfairness in how Christmas song chart positions are quantified. And knowing that the Christmas #1 is basically going to be a two horse race between All I Want For Christmas Is You and Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree until the end of time seems a bit redundant. But I absolutely think new festive songs should be able to chart for the first couple of years after their initial release, allowing them the chance to become a hit before they get relegated to a chart of Christmas standards that are going to be playlist mainstays forever. Lemon Blood 363
I don’t think they should necessarily be banned, I just think there should be more restrictions on the criteria for Christmas songs to enter/re-enter the hot
