Wildlife specialists from Rewilding Romania have confirmed the presence of a moose (Alces alces) in Hunedoara County, Romania, after directly observing and filming the animal. The discovery is considered important for Romania’s wildlife, as moose are extremely rare in the country today.

Rewilding Romania notes that stable moose populations exist in Poland and Ukraine, and since moose can travel long distances, the animal may be dispersing naturally and only passing through the area. The organization will continue monitoring the site and working with local authorities to ensure the animal’s protection.

Historically, moose did live in northern Romania, mainly arriving from Ukraine, where they were locally known as “plotuni.”
