The reason why this is so uncommon in Australia is because the Australian government did take genuine steps to immediately prevent this when it happened last. I wish the US would take notes. Serbia did the same thing recently, which also shows that it should not be difficult to instantly pass legislation about this in this time.

As the circumstances of the US would indicate- we sadly are nowhere near this and in fact we are now several steps behind  I lived in Australia for a few years and I love it/miss it dearly, and I haven't stopped grieving over the entire situation.

I want to make a statement that I am so sorry for everyone affected by this tragedy and I am so sorry to the Australian people who are grappling with this news and trying to fathom how something could have happened in their amazing country. I only lived there for a few years but it is a second home to me and I visit often/stay in close contact with many friends I made there, and I am not only heartbroken hearing about it, but devastated as I speak to my friends over there and hear their thoughts.

There is no place for such violence under any pretense, and for this to have taken place in a country like Australia of all places truly breaks me. I have not stopped crying out of the idea for the fear this now puts onto every citizen in every city there. I love you Australia, and everyone there, and I wish we didn't live in a world where this happens. 

 

edit: I have been talking to my friends there and am continuing to speak with them and offer support. I plan to be up all night if I need to so I do not miss a chance to be there for someone. If anyone here is having a difficult time processing this, please do not hesitate to reach out personally because I am here for you.
