MAYHEM desperately needed a Happy Mistake type ballad. Blade of Grass composition makes no sense to me. It’s a song about her engagement but sounds like Dope 2.0 :air:

Exactly finally Someone Who thinks this. She loves him like Dope i Guess?

Its like She wants tò kill herself for tying the knot. Melodramatic and depressive honestly

Love this record but I honestly don't get why some people say it fits and should've been on MAYHEM. Its narration and mindset clearly belongs to the way she felt during Chromatica. It even feels like a bridge from Chromatica to MAYHEM, that's why (to me) it made so much sense to label Harlequin as LG6.5

Idk, some stick to the words "my head is filled with broken mirrors" to the LG7 artwork... And that's not. Just look deeper. In Happy Mistake she was trying to fix those mirrors, on MAYHEM she ****ed up those mirrors and embraced them in a loving way. Totally different paths to deal with trauma

I haven’t thought of it before, but this definitely reminds me of Creep and we know she loves Radiohead, always did.

I thought of this song as more of a reference to Hurt by either NIN or Johnny Cash. Both were played on Gaga Radio.

The ending:

„If I could bottle up a sunny day
So brilliantly
It'd wash away the sad mistakes”

is similar to the ending of Hurt:

”If I could start again a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way”

I also believe Disease (The Antidote) was also inspired by Reznor’s piano renditions of his songs (for example  Something I Can Never Have). The instrumental is very NIN and so is the vibe, the way Gaga sings.

Happy Mistake is an amazing track, absolute highlight of Harlequin. I only wish they didn’t use so much vocal pitch correction in that Live version.

It instead of blade of grass would have been perfect. A better ballad to transition to DWAS at the end of the album.

Thematically, I think BOG into DWAs works much better. Honestly, I think she could've included Happy Mistake right before BOG and it still would've worked.

So y'all are telling me an album including Happy Mistake and Perfect Celebrity would've made sense?

I prefer this live version over the original track. It just hits all the right spots. It's immaculate.

Meh song, the performance is overrated too, heavy on autotune. She sounds soooooo much better this year with a thousand better performances.

IMO there’s nothing incongruent about those songs being on the same album. As much of a strong front she puts up in PC, there’s still a huge amount of angst and HM could be viewed as the resolution of that angst.

PC = railing against the division between Gaga + Stefani

HM = confronting it and accepting it.

I mean I loathe the fact that they autotuned this, but it’s not as if they did it because she needed it (which makes it a million times more frustrating). I know you don’t care for the song, but we can’t be acting like we can’t tell that the vocal under the tuning is excellent.

I get what you're saying but I don't think she's accepting it in HM... Like at all. Quite the opposite. To me it's a "I give up, no longer strong to deal with this"

I don’t think that’s the case, tbh. The bulk of the song is: “If I could resolve this internal conflict, I wouldn’t feel so much regret” (If I could fix the broken pieces, then I’d have a happy mistake) and when she ends with “make my happy mistake,” the music literally resolves (the chord progression is positively resolved after much of the dissonance throughout the song) and lyrically, although kind of vague, I read that line as meaning, “I’m choosing to view this all as a happy mistake (I wouldn’t change a thing)”.

It really is a shame that this was tied to Joker, and for that reason she'll pay it dust until the end of times... I truly believe this could've become one of her signature ballads.
