Anderson123 39,481
I'm just going to leave this here in case anyone wants to know how Die With A Smile was created from what we know. Spoiler According to American record producer and songwriter D'Mile, Mars "had the hook, at least the lyrics or theme to the hook, about being next to someone if the world was ending." Despite not knowing how it should song they only worked on "two or three different versions", when compared to the usually large number of versions they create. At a certain point, Mars came up with the song's chords and next with the hook chords. As things felt in place, D'Mile felt it could be something special. Nevertheless, once they reached a certain point, Mars wasn't sure how to further developed it and held it for a year before its release.[12] When the idea arose for Mars and Gaga to collaborate, American record producer Andrew Watt, who was working with Gaga on her sixth solo studio album, Mayhem (2025), contacted Mars.[13][12] The latter asked Watt to come to the studio so he could play him the song.[12] Watt, Gaga and Michael Polansky drove to Mars's studio and Gaga "loved" the track.[13] After hearing it, she was shown the chords so she could write the sheet music. Gaga sat on the piano to sing and play in order to get the song's feeling and they "cut it right then and there."[12] Regarding the writing and recording process, Gaga explained that one night she was working on her next album at a studio in Malibu when she received a call from Mars, who invited her to another studio nearby to listen to a song he had been working on.[8][14] She said: "I went to see him at around 10 p.m. He showed me the idea, and then we wrote the second verse. We recorded it by 2 a.m. Bruno had a very specific way he wanted it to sound, and I wanted to give him that."[15] She also mentioned that they aimed for the harmonies to feel "very 1970s" and were inspired by the collaborations between Carole King and James Taylor during the creative process.[16] In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she stated: I remember feeling that it was a song people needed to hear. I write music all the time, and sometimes you feel like you're creating something that some people might like. But there are other times when you work on something, and you just know it's going to speak deeply to all kinds of people. I knew it immediately. For his part, Mars remarked that Gaga "was kind enough to let [him] be on it" and said that working with her "was an honor."[8][18] Watt told the making of "Die with a Smile" was "as old-school", recalling that Mars and Fauntleroy began playing while Gaga wrote out the chords and bass changes.[19] He said they "started breaking down the song together, singing and arranging harmonies," and noted that "everything on that song is live — drums, bass, guitars, vocals," giving it a raw and organic sound.[19] Watt elaborated on the recording session and revealed that he, Mars, Gaga and D'Mile worked on the song until 5 a.m., with Gaga set for another commitment just hours later. Watt described their recording dynamic as a "healthy competition". Once the instrumentation was finished Gaga started to record her vocals. Mars wanted to be her vocal producer and involved how they were going to sing together, which Gaga agreed to. They kept "going back and forth" during this process. Just a little reminder that writing music like this takes a lot of effort. At least way more than Gaga writing the lyrics and singing over stuff like Donatella, Mary Jane Holland, Aura, etc. (and prob many more) which were old instrumentals or released songs. They're all Gaga's songs regardless how they were created because she makes hundreds of them and in several versions and picks very few to release. She doesn't have to sit in an empty room and write the lyrics from scratch and do the instrumental by herself to call it her song. At least way more than Gaga writing the lyrics and singing over stuff like Donatella, Mary Jane Holland, Aura, etc. (and prob many more) which were old instrumentals or released songs. Absolutely takes a lot of effort. That being said: Gaga’s contribution (as stated here) is her verse and the harmonies. My argument has never been that Gaga didn’t put in work on those songs, but more that I don’t really think her authorship as a musician shines through as much on that song as it does on others. There are a million ways to write a song and I’m not talking about right or wrong (or even necessarily good or bad, even though I don’t care for DWAS or SC), but more about the extent to which her voice as an artist comes through (which is, ofc, more subjective). When it comes to something like Aura, for example, even though she didn’t create the instrumental from scratch, the melodic structure, the tone, and the lyrics *scream* Gaga to me to the point that I think she shaped the song into something it wouldn’t have otherwise been (I sincerely doubt when Infected Mushroom made that track they thought it would become an agro + sexual pop/rock/EDM fusion about a pop star theatrically deconstructing her persona). Whereas for DWAS, Gaga’s contribution (while beautiful and effective), I don’t think necessarily *transforms* the base into something that feels indelibly hers (ie couldn’t have been believably written or performed by another artist). It’s objectively a well-written song, but it lacks, imo, the distinctive voice that I associate with + assign to her work and I view it more as a reflection of her working beautifully as a chameleon and adapting to someone else’s frame as opposed to generating a more distinctive/singular vision for a song (as she often does). Just my two cents, but that’s really what I’m talking about when I talk about who’s song it feels like it is.
