Netherlands Denied Asylum From US Trans Woman

A Dutch court has upheld the decision to reject an American trans woman’s application for asylum after the 28-year-old challenged the decision earlier this year. 

Veronica Clifford-Carlos, a visual artist from California, applied for asylum in the Netherlands in the wake of the president’s continued targeting of trans rights and villainization of the trans community.

Mixed feelings tbh.

If it was someone from a state like Florida, absolutely she would need to gtfo. But California? The biggest risk at the immediate moment (from the government at least) is not being able to mark "female" on your ID.

At the same time, the overall situation is volatile and could change at any minute.

So...I get it...but I also generally support the idea that anyone should be allowed to move anywhere they want for any reason

Unfortunately, the tighter American immigration rules are, the tighter other nations immigration rules for Americans get. Everything is about reciprocity. And the more America locks out foreign nationals, the more we will be stuck here.

Im not trying deminish the legitomacy of feelings of feeling unsafe but we have to take a step back and keep in mind asylum seeking has always had a pretty high bar in most Countries and usually gets granted for the worst circumstsncez

 

The circumstances are also going to take into account individual circumstances which we dont have all the details here on but simply "feeling unsafe" without showing some serious tangible risk to your life and prosecution is not gonna cut it for being granted asylum in most cases. What shes describing is the same nasty bigotry that takes a toll on you emotionally but is hard to prove its putting your life in serious danger

 

Denied cases like this happen very frequently for many different reasons. Focusing too much on this 1 case that doesnt have more details to suggest she is in fact in danger would be an example of political polarozation imo (just on the left instead of the right). Something I have a bit of an issue with because its part of the reason politics increasingly is getting more and more divisive and opposing sides cant even talk to eachother anymore, its not healthy

 

But to be clear, im not saying this means she doesnt deserve empathy for her feelings cuz I cant imagine walking on the street and being yelled "***g0t" and other slurs or getting thrats. Im merely saying on a bigger context this denial (at least based on the information current available on it) is not that surprising and ground breaking and ppl should not over sensationalize and make it out to be something its not. If more information comes out to suggest in her case she is in fact in danger thats a different story.

Man at this point me to. Canada has gone downhill so much its not even funny. It doesnt even appear to be tge same Country my family moved back to in 2002

 

A non insignificant number of families were actually still buying houses on 1 income and some with 1 full time income and 1 part time income... and I rarely heard the term pay check to paycheck. 

 

If a familily had 2 full time incomes, usually it was to enhance their quality if life and they had a lot.

 

My Grandparents (they came before us in 2002 tho, they were here longer) they payed off a house in 5 years and they retired with lots of savings and confort... neither had education, my grandpa worked at a battery factory and my grandmother at a sock factory (with pension benefits)
