She should've took a bigger break, I can't separate this era (even if its just a droplet single) as she is still on her gimmicky 143 tour. The song is undeniably her strongest output in years, but she should've waited another year once the tour was over and people had a rest from her.

i wish the production was a little heavier and lyrics were a bit more complex but nah id say she did well good time. I can hear the effort in the song and i can finally understand a direction/vision in this one. I don’t think she FULLY nailed it and am hoping this is a transitional song to an album that better fits my above description, and that she released this one bc it seemed the most radio safe. But who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️

I wouldn’t say so. The song is a an improvement from the 143 tracks. Just a shame she seems like an a-hole personality wise - like that cake throwing incident.
 

Campy pop tunes can only take you so far these days, you need a bit more about you and Katy always seems to sit herself on the wrong side of the fence. I.E frivolous trips to space during a cost of living crisis.

It comes off as her basically feeling sorry for herself due to the hate she’s been getting lately, but it’s like she still doesn’t care or doesn’t get why that happened in the first place…

So in my opinion yeah it kind of just doubles down on the problem with her image at the moment.

I watched the music video and, at first, I was curious. She showed up in regular clothes, and I thought, maybe she’s finally trying to show a more serious side. But pretty quickly, it turned into the same goofy and silly style she always does, and I lost interest. The song didn’t really click with me either. Even though I’m not a fan, I would honestly enjoy seeing her try a more serious artistic approach someday.

No, she needed a 360 direction change after 143. Going back to her old sound and style is what fans have been asking of her since Witness but she's only started listening now as she's realising she's testing the goodwill of her long time fans. She's tried doing experimental pop with pixie crop (Witness), a goofy Teenage Dream throwback (Smile), a sexy europop mess (143). They haven't worked, so going back to indie pop rock songwriter like her debut is her best bet. It's a halfway decent pop song for her standards and the video is nowhere near as goody as usual. I do believe it's coming from a genuine place since it's literally about the break up she's just gone through and she's channelling all that into her art in the moment. Break ups can produce an artist's best work, so she may as well. You've got to hand it to her, music is clearly what she wants to do and she's not giving up.
