Democrats "cave" on Shutdown, clean CR through January

They’re so pathetic. Honestly, they deserve to keep losing. Caving at this moment shows how spineless and weak they are. This shutdown was on the Republicans and the Dems essentially bailed them out. And with nothing to gain in the end.

Literally no reason for them to cave at this point. If anything, it's only damaging to the Democrat Party to cave now because they get nothing, people went through the anxiety and consequences of the shutdown, and now they're going to blame it on the Democrats all the same. Leaves no kind of confidence that the Democrat Party has any kind of integrity, courage, or convictions.

This is an important detail to this, they're going to get a vote on the healthcare subsidies in Decemeber & if they don't get them, they can have another shutdown in January

I mean to my knowledge none of the 8 who crossed the floor in the Senate are up for reelection in 2026, so don't have to worry about the primary season starting in late Jan/early Feb. 

For the House Democrats though, they've just put them all into the firing line ahead of the real primary season starting and I doubt there's enough Dems in the House planning on retiring to ensure this deal gets the votes without putting existing Dems at risk of being primaried.

That SNAP funding at least means that the next shutdown when this CR expires on Feb 1st won't have the Republicans using starvation to force a deal.

I mean it kind of puts Democrats in a great position, no? Now SNAP is extended, federal workers are getting paid, air traffic controllers can go to work again, and there will be a vote on ACA subsidy extension. 20 Republican Senators are up for re-election next year. So subsidies will either get extended or they'll have a tough campaign next year and that creates pressure.

I mean 3 million people will have jobs (that pay) again. I think it's easy to forget that so many people were not getting their regular incomes with everything else going on. But it's still pretty important.

3 million jobs that weren't being paid, for no reason. Because the Democrats started the shutdown as a gambit. They might as well not had the shutdown if they weren't going to get any actual change. That's what I meant by the anxiety and consequences, that the shutdown put a lot of people in jeopardy and anguish, and essentially, it was all in vain. And those people will attribute that hardship to the Democrats, not the Republicans.

Iirc she has been vocally opposed to letting the ACA subsidies die, going against the grain of her party.

I don't trust her at all but hopefully her malicious and spiteful intent towards her fellow Reps makes her do what Dems should have done

I think it's less about that and more about the damage very much already being done and the majority of the public sentiment was telling Dems to hold the line to protect healthcare costs from exploding.

But now, not only has the damage been done, trust has been eroded. And it's so transparent that they're throwing Dems with no elections left to win under the bus. Well, them and Fetterman but he's basically a Republican now.

Dems thrive when turnout is high and all this shutdown has done is make both parties look stupid. When people on the fence don't see a good option, they stay home.

Still stupid. Dems were winning in the court of public opinion on this, and there’s no telling if a second theoretical shutdown would play as well. They won’t have the Republicans look bad for SNAP running out next time either. smh

Honestly, I said all along the Democrats would lose the fight. I didn't expect them to give up. This deal somehow manages to make them walk away having less clout than when they started.
