Democrats "cave" on Shutdown, clean CR through January

Without needing to use the nuclear option, the Republicans in the Senate have been able to secure 8 Democrat votes on a CR that will run until January 30th. 
Most importantly, the Democrats have achieved *zero* actual change in this "compromise". 
 

"A deal aimed at ending the US government shutdown has passed the Senate, paving the way for the record-breaking impasse to be broken.

After a weekend of negotiations in Washington, a minority of Democrats joined with Republicans and voted in favour of an agreement.

The vote is a procedural first step towards passing a compromise to fund the government since it ran out of money 1 October.

It will need to clear several more hurdles - including a vote from the House of Representatives - before federal employees and services return, but it is the first serious sign of progress after 40 days of deadlock.

 

The agreement was negotiated between Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the White House, with Democratic senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, and Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

Republicans - who hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate - needed the measure to clear a 60-vote minimum threshold.

They were able attract eight votes from the other side of the aisle, while losing just one in Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who voted against after saying the bill would increase national debt.

The deal includes an agreement for a vote in December on extending healthcare subsidies that are due to expire this year, a key issue Democrats had been holding out for concessions on."

Senate Minority leader Schumer did not back the deal, but Democrat's #2 ranking senator **** Durbin did back the deal. Durbin is retiring and not facing reelection.

Is this not something? This is what Dems have been standing for, if it's kicking that specific issue down the road to be a standalone issue then how is this caving? 

Or am I misunderstanding something here  

I mean, I'm not surprised regardless. A massive portion of the current Dem flock on capitol hill is spineless, toothless, and needs to go to make room for new, young blood.

So the Republicans win in this scenario because they've got the clean funding bill they wanted AND the Democrats got nothing. 
The Democrats get nothing, because this deal only secures a guaranteed vote on funding the Healthcare subsidies in December in the Senate - it doesn't secure Republican support and it doesn't secure a vote in the House. The Republicans have 53 votes in the Senate so they can block it. 

So the Dems have agreed to everything the Republicans wanted before the shutdown happened, and in return, have got no actual concessions from the Republicans.

True, I just did some more reading on it. They know that resolution will fail in Dec and I think they're planning on it.

So, aside from that idiot Fetterman, every Dem that voted with the Reps isn't up for reelection. That stinks of DNC conspiracy to try and keep the sh*t off the hands of Dems that need clean images and plausible deniability while the party itself gets to play politics.

They want Republicans to have the ability to burn it down 'cause they're gonna spend all next year campaigning on "our party relented only so 40 million Americans could get their SNAP benefits and federal workers could return to work. Republicans ended up tripling your healthcare costs by stripping the ACA anyway!"

I would be like "yeah, that's good politics, let the opponent flame themselves out" but people are literally going to die and Trump is going to take a victory lap which will invigorate his base

The only good thing I can say about this deal is it secures back pay for federal workers & reverses job cuts (although as we know from earlier rounds of firings, those workers don't come back in full), it also secures SNAP funding until Oct 2026. 

That SNAP funding at least means that the next shutdown when this CR expires on Feb 1st won't have the Republicans using starvation to force a deal.

Open to correction on this, but my understanding is that this deal needs to pass a vote in the House in order to take effect, and that means that Johnson will have to recall the House, and that in turn means that he will have to swear in Adelita Grijalva, and that would mean that she would then tip the balance in terms of triggering the release of the Epstein files ?

Yeah, as soon as the house is back in session she'll be sworn in (long overdue) and theoretically the votes will be there to release part of the files.

You are correct - but there's no guarantee the House will back the deal. 

Will depend how many Democratic Reps back the compromise & how many Republicans fight it. Rand Paul's no vote would suggest that some of the extremist republicans in the House will oppose it as well.

Let’s hope it doesn’t pass the house, these 8 senators need recalling and there needs to be primaries. Chuck, times up buddy, he needs to lose his leadership position if the Dems want to stand any chance next year. This has essentially all been for nothing, clearly bribed by corporate interests. A lot of people will have lost their jobs for nothing in their eyes and they’re going to be livid, polls showed the Republicans were to blame, they shouldn’t have folded. It’s a pathetic show, once again, poor optics for the (Senate) Dems, no wonder people view them so poorly, no back bone at all.
