Democrats "cave" on Shutdown, clean CR through January

the republicans control the house and senate, we were never going to win this battle 

lots of govt workers havent been getting paid, thanksgiving is around the corner ppl need to fly and not have delays 

my moms food stamps was taken away and she didnt have it for weeks. 

yall need to get over this notion that the dems shouldnt have caved, they caved because they dont want people to suffer anymore especially during the holiday season. 

if healthcare gets ****ed, its the republicans fault because they are the ones proposing and forcing it on everyone, they have every branch on their side. 

what did u guys want? for this to go past christmas???

I mean, I'm not surprised regardless. A massive portion of the current Dem flock on capitol hill is spineless, toothless, and needs to go to make room for new, young blood.

Because it doesnt really secure or guarantee anything. It only secures a vote and if Republicans dont wanna secure it now, will they vote in favour of it later? If they were gonna support it theyd support it now so its very uncertain it will pass

This, imo, is the worst part of it. If all of the tumult caused by the shutdown doesn’t end up protecting the ACA subsidies, what the **** was it even for? I also can’t get over how spineless and unprincipled the Dems who crossed the aisle on this are. Both Hassan and Kaine talked about how devastating this would be for their constituents and yet they ****ing did it anyway.

The only thing a vote will ensure will be that they have a clean record of the GOP voting against the extension of the ACA subsidies, but that also begs the question of whether or not they couldn’t have just decoupled the subsidies from the CR in the first place and avoided the shutdown altogether.

Of course they could have  

That's one of the games politicians play in congress that I hate the most. 20+ things in one bill 'cause god forbid they have to vote more than once every three months, and each party shoehorns in something the other hates which clogs up the whole process.

Just one clean bill for each resolution and a real, required 40+ hour work week with only two weeks off a year for vacation for senators could fix so many problems with our sh*tass government.

Yeah, omnibus bills are insane and the fact that we pass several of massive omnibus bills a year is just…🪦

I mean this is a fundamental misunderstanding of how Congress works for approving funding. 

There was a chance of actually achieving their stated aim of protecting 22 million americans from paying over double their current health insurance premiums. 

Any funding bill, as it stands, requires 60 votes to pass. There are ways around this, but the Republicans refused to use it (because they knew if they did it would allow Democrats to do it in future as well). Because the Republicans did not want to establish a precedent in the Senate that removed the 60 vote requirement - there was scope for movement. 

And despite what the congressional republicans had been saying, Trump was starting to flip flop which is a major signal he's about to endorse a compromise - because the handlers had pushed him away from the nuclear option. 

So now, this may go away before Christmas. But it will then happen again after Christmas. So it'll be back to square 1. 

Plus this deal was only approved in the Senate by some breakaway senators. The House Speaker is not honouring the commitment to have a vote on healthcare premiums - the only concession that the rebel 8 won.

It is not yet clear if any Democrats in the House will back the "compromise" although there's some moderates not running in 2026 who might. As it stands, without Democratic support, the deal will fail in the House if 2 republicans vote no. There's at least 3 republicans on watch for opposing the bill. So there is a strong possibility that tonight the deal gets blocked in the House and not only did the 8 Democrats in the Senate betray their caucus, they did it and got nothing.
