Well I wouldn't say they gave up, they basically kicked the can down the road until after the holidays. They've set the stage tho, when we get back here in January & people are wondering why their premiums have skyrocketed, they'll understand who's to blame.

They've got nothing out of this besides kicking the can down the road. They blinked, the Republicans haven't given them anything. All they've done is put a lot of people under extreme stress for no reason in the end. 
The idea that people hurt by the premiums going up won't be mad that the Democrats gave up their only leverage - when Trump had even started talking at times about making a deal on it - just doesn't stick.

This also sets the Democrats in the House up for a civil war in the Primary window. It's sabotaged the 2026 midterms.

Because this adds fuel to the fire that is the ongoing democratic party civil war between centrists & leftists. 

This creates a hotbutton issue for every single House race next year and its established the issue just as the invisible primary peaks and the real primary season begins in January. 

Any Representative that votes for the compromise is now at increased risk of being primaried which will be a major distraction from the actual midterm election later in the year. It risks creating Bernie or Bust type momentum. They'll lose campaign funds as a result and the primary winner will emerge damaged by internal conflict. 

They'll have to defend backing a compromise deal that has directly cost Americans as it now guarantees healthcare premiums will go up. And not only will they be defending having given up their own leverage over preventing that, theyll be defending giving up the leverage after having spent 40 days putting people's income and social security at risk for naught. And potentially be justifying risking their jobs again if a 2nd shutdown happens. 

Like the fight is over - the Senate democrats have surrendered the leverage. The deal ensures that the next potential shutdown won't effect the military's wages which is the only card that actually impacts the Republicans agenda. They've got nothing in return, no healthcare premium extension and zero way to force it through now. And a February 1st shutdown would only be a partial shutdown which makes it harder to actually hurt the government. 

Look at the way Democrats eyeing up 2026 and even 2028 federal races are reacting - they know that this hurts the ticket and especially for Blue Dogs trying to weather the progressive storm, it incentivises internal party conflict.

I disagree. Republicans were taking the lion share of the blame for all the shutdown woes. Not holding out until holiday travel started being impacted was a mistake. It would have turned up the heat further, and Trump probably would have caved.

Idk if PR heat even effects Trump anymore and he's set to make bank if/when these ACA credits expire (I forget the details but he's got stakes somewhere).

He also just won a decision by the SCOTUS that he could turn off SNAP, prevent state governments from doing anything to fund local food stamps, and punish businesses that discount food items.

He was ready to burn it all 'cause he knew Dems would cave. And now he can be even more sure of that.

My main comment on democrats right now, being someone from Virginia which just flipped back to blue, is the candidate can be moderate while appealing to the dems because we want anything but what is happening right now. Stop making the issues from a lower scale the height and focus on affordable living, healthcare, job market, and overall livelihood of citizens. I am so sorry for how that comment offends somebody but the current climate of our country has been fueled by hatred for so long. Right now in the US- anybody sensible knows that we have to focus on uniting in our humanity first before going back to tackle other issues. If we can't do that, we are going to run ourselves into the ground.

We are sadly in a place where the greatest concern is staying alive and affording that life. The recent election gave hope and promise to restoring us to a place where we can subsequently tackle further issues, but we have to get this country past the condition Trump put us in. 

Again, I'm so sorry if this sounds cynical or offensive because I believe in rights for everyone and stay optimistic for a brighter future... but sometimes we have to be realistic about the steps it takes to get there since it won't happen overnight. I see momentum and energy growing to get us there though, and we cannot lose it.

The message was republicans caused the shutdown by refusing to compromise. The democrats folding without getting any concessions means the republicans can place blame squarely on them during midterms because it was all for nothing. 

You talk about staying alive and affording to live but them caving means no insurance extension and more price hikes. Meanwhile the administration is still attacking it and wants ACA absolutely gutted.
