Zohran Mamdani is NYC’s next mayor

I'm happy for him, and for New York. I'm a progressive Democrat. However, I know that this win is going to fire up the Republican base like no other. It's going to create a new character for the right to point at and say "This radical is the new Democratic Party!"...His win, while great for NYC, hurts Democratic chances to take back the House and Senate (and combat Trump's authoritarianism) next year.

Noteworthy is that even in liberal New York (which isn't a great representation of the US as a whole), the margin in which he won is smaller than the margins in which Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger won statewide in New Jersey and Virginia. Candidates succeed in winning over larger swaths of people when their policies are pragmatic.

Democrats need to stop being afraid of being called scary socialists. They will always call them that, what matters is to win elections and deliver to the people.

The NYC mayoral race isn’t comparable to the other races because Cuomo was running as an independent but is really a Democrat. 

Democrats swept tonight with Mamdani on a ballot and people are fed up with fascism. 

Centrist Democrats also won last year in key races. Centrist Democrats work to win in select areas. But we should have bold people driving public perception. 

Trump is anything but pragmatic and has been president TWICE and currently has the government shutdown precisely because him and Republicans don’t want to compromise.

Yeah this. Bernie has been getting called a socialist consistently since the 80s/90s. This is never gonna change with far-right types. It's better to accept it and fight it than give in to it.

- They threatened to leave when deBlasio won, but in the end, the city had even more millionaires.

I see this, but don't worry we are coming out fighting! As long as we keep pushing with this momentum we will not let them win in the end.
