Senator Bernie Sanders acknowledged in a recent podcast interview that President Donald Trump performed better than former President Joe Biden in securing the U.S.-Mexico border.

“So, has historically the United States done well under Democrats and Republicans protecting the border? The answer is no. Trump did a better job,” Sanders said on the podcast. “I don’t like Trump, you know, but we should have a secure border. And it ain’t that hard to do. Biden didn’t do it. Those before him did not do it. We should have a secure border period. I think most people in the Congress agree with that.”

The Trump administration has essentially shut down asylum and reduced border crossings to historic lows through stricter measures aimed at curbing migration. Unlawful crossings at the Southern border have fallen to their lowest level in more than 50 years, according to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) data released in early October.

The Trump administration have implemented hardline border security measures, which have contributed to a drop in apprehensions, marking a significant shift after years of rising border crossings under the Biden administration.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is downplaying outrage against Graham Platner, who he is backing in the Democratic Senate primary in Maine, over Platner’s controversial posts on Reddit and a tattoo that resembles a Nazi “totenkopf.”

Sanders said there are “more important issues” than Graham’s decision to get a tattoo while serving in the Marines.

“He went through a dark period in his life. I suspect that Graham Platner is not the only American to have gone through a dark period,” the Vermont senator said during an appearance Tuesday on “The Axios Show.”

“But what he did was, he has expressed his darkness on the internet, probably not a brilliant thing to do, all right, and he said things that are stupid, things that were hurtful. He has apologized for it,” he added.

Sanders said Platner told him at one point he was dealing with PTSD.

“This is a guy who will tell you, who has served four tours of duty with the United States military, he was in the middle of some heavy-duty combat. He was a machine gunner, he mowed down people, you know?” he told Axios.

“He went through some very difficult experiences in the military as a machine gunner seeing his friends killed, came out of the military, he will acknowledge — I’m not telling you what he doesn’t say — he had PTSD. He went to the VA and, by the way, he says they rebuilt his life,” Sanders added.

Still, Vermont Republican Party Chair Paul Dame called on Sanders to retract or explain his endorsement of Platner, echoing EMILY’s List President Jessica Mackler, who characterized Platner’s comments as “unacceptable and disqualifying,” according to the Vermont Daily Chronicle.

The Platner tattoo is such a confusing thing lmao

It'll be interesting to see whether the tired dem voters reject him because of the tattoo (after his excuse) or accept him over an establishment "moderate"

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

1. He’s not wrong about the border, but it could be done in a different way and without dehumanizing immigrants. Biden fumbled the border horribly and downplayed the crisis that was obviously occurring. A huge reason the election was lost to Trump.

2. The Nazi tattoo is a red flag but I think most Dems in that state just want Collins out so this probably won’t get them to not vote for him if they believe he’s sincere with his reasoning behind the issue

Again, not saying the tattoo isn’t a red flag, but it’s also funny how this comes out while an oppo dump of his Reddit comments drops with the takeaway being, “He’s a communist!”

you can argue border crossings are lower now that trumps scared the **** out of everyone, but you cannot ignore the fact that ICE snatching up people on the streets and targeting anyone whos brown is unconstitutional.

this level of hysteria around immigration is unprecedented

these people are still humans, they arent animals. additionally, our agricultural infrastructure is dependent on undocumented immigrants...... the reason we have food on our tables is because of them.

how is deporting 4 million ppl not enough for u.

yall literally make things up

obama deported 5 million immigrants when u combine returns and formal removals. this narrative that they just let ppl in is completely false. but neither biden or obama used the military to snatch ppl off the streets. they did it the right way - without demonizing hispanics. trumps rhetoric makes ppl think that anyone who speaks spanish or is mexican is the enemy.

I thought it was specifically talking about actively protecting the border from the get go, not deportation which includes people who crossed many years ago.

Apparently Illegal border crossings hit lowest level in over 50 years according to CBS a couple weeks ago

fine i give trump his kudos for scaring the **** out of ppl to not come into the us from mexico, fine

but i will never support trump going into cities with the military to kidnap ppl. you can give him props for making ppl scared into not coming here, but you cant ignore that his immigration tactics as a whole are insane and dangerous. he has 100% demonized not just undoccumented immigrants, but latinos as an entire demographic. ice agents are dragging and beating up ppl. and im sorry but if we were to get rid of all undocumented ppl in the US, our agricultural industry would literally fall apart.

you have ppl saying that the NFL having bad bunny as a performer is anti american. trump is turning half the country against the entire hispanic community, not just undocumented immigrants.

Yeah that's why it should be looked at as two separate things, I imagined that's how Bernie was viewing it too, speaking specifically on the border only not what ICE is doing.
I haven't seen anything about the NFL but I don't see how it's anti american or as if the half time show has only ever been limited to US performers

Bernie did speak against how badly Trump is treating immigrants on that same podcast. The podcaster is MAGA, and he was saying Trump won because Democrats did badly with the border, so Bernie has to first admit it before criticizing what Trump is doing. But sadly twitter clips and edit it to make it seem like Bernie is in support of Trump.

Big yikes.

Trump hasn't done sh*t to fix the perceived problems at the border. He's only heightened the hysteria around it to feed off the paranoia and hate of the American people, fed a government police to abuse immigrants and racial minorities while violating the rights of citizens, and erected detention camps to house ICE's kidnapped victims like animals.

Shame on Bernie for giving that f*cker an inch. An inch he absolutely does not deserve but surely that soundbite will be doing work. Figured he was smarter than to be a pick-me. Why the hell is he even on a MAGA podcast at all? :saladga: you cannot reach those people.

Anyway, every problem people have with "tHe BoRdEr" is such a non issue.

Crime? American citizens commit crime at several times the rate as immigrants.

Drugs? Most drugs that enter this country don't cross the Southern border.

Terrorism? Domestic terrorism kills thousands every year.

The biggest problem with the border is that people trying to cross it are criminalized and dehumanized leading to them having to sneak across and sometimes end up dead in the desert somewhere.

The US has been one of the most difficult and dangerous countries to try to enter and live in as an immigrant for decades already. The only thing Trump's done is exacerbate that problem a hundred fold.

Whimsical bitch

Yeah I think it’s one of those things where people genuinely don’t apply enough critical thinking and jump to “he’s a shill for Trump”. The reality is he is talking about the border specifically not the treatment of immigrants which as you said he said is deplorable and heinous. Also worth noting that he’s being fairly literal about needing to get the border under control bc he had a great policy for expanding immigration to the U.S. And he's saying Biden didn’t have one which is kinda true.

as for the tattoo…I mean lbr he’s probably met the guy in some capacity and presently bumps elbows with the most vile, disgusting people in our country in DC…I feel like yeah to him it probably is less of a big deal given the stakes he’s surrounded by. Idk I think this is clickbait shared but if you think on it a second it checks out with where he is, what his job is, and who he is:

I’d actually say the biggest issue with the border and immigration is how difficult it is to achieve legal status, maintain it, and become a citizen. It’s absolutely insanely strenuous and has been for ages. It’s ridiculous when you consider most white people’s families came in here basically on vibes back in the day. DACA was a good start but even that had unnecessary complications.

and a present enormous problem is that the people running it are vindictive children who salivate at the chance to inflict this violence. It’s an entirely unprofessional mess from the top down. In a sane society, Stephen Miller would never have graduated homeroom and Kristi Noem would be your weird aunt sending unhinged emails from her ranch in SD, and nothing more.
