Why did Mayhem start so strong then go full disco funk?

I personally would’ve loved an album of abracadabras and diseases!

an album of zombie boy, vanish, shadow, killah, dead dance, KFL, CSTH etc would’ve been really cool back in 2018 before dua lipa did it with future nostalgia. But now here in 2025 it’s not as exciting because everyone now already did that sound when it was trendy

except for Zombieboy there is no disco funk. Shadow of a Man borderline, it's more 80s dance, not funk

Kill for Love is basically pure disco, TDD has heavy disco + funk influence, VIY has disco influence, Killah is an industrial funk song, and SOAM + DCT have heavy 80s groove vibes (not pure disco influence, but definitely adjacent).

Ngl if any of the retro sounds on MAYHEM make you think of Future Nostalgia, your musical frame of reference is insanely limited

OMG same!! PC is one of the best songs hands down, and I remember thinking the entire time leading up to the album that it would be rock... and when she had posted she wasn't making a rock album I overhyped myself thinking she was just messing around and it would be rock! I'm glad MAYHEM ended up the way it did, but hopefully LG8 or something smaller in between will be a complete rock album! I'm also a big metalhead, and dying for her to explore that genre more because she's got the vocals for it

whenever I see that snippet of her singing Led Zeppelin on Howard Stern make the rounds there's always so many comments seemingly from the GP begging for her to make a rock album, it's crazy how far into her career we are and it still hasn't happened yet

That alongside her performance with Metalica, Sweet Sounds of Heaven, and her version of Whats Up from the ArtRAVE all show so much promise it could be her best album ever! The GP would go nuts for it almost like when they first realized her talent after her Sound of Music Tribute (that wasn't rock lol, but I think that was a big moment for her proving her authentic talent and ability... although she could pull off a rock version of my favorite things)

She said from the beginning it was a mix of genres and it’s how she wanted it. She was going to make the whole album sound like PC and then changed her mind.

Cuz of Michael...

They’re Jealous and have the annoying “negative thinking” trait that many gays have.

Michael is hmm complicated from what we know as a mod team, on one hand he’s really supportive and everything but on the other he took too much control and pushed away Haus members and limiting her real life interactions with fans to the point that “no fans” allowed..

Perhaps but we also don’t even really know her relationships with these haus members. Ns but historically she’s chosen friends that by her own admission have been bad for her and she’s gone through churn and burn with the haus before. I see where you’re coming from, I just feel like the rampant speculation is silly when at the end of the day it’s all about a series of relationships and the details and complexities I’m sure are enormous so it’s better just to leave it be until there’s a clear issue. But as is she seems to be doing better than ever?

My theory is that the album was originally all songs like Disease, Abracadabra, Perfect Celebrity, Can't Stop The High and Kill For Love, but she kept writing and went in a different direction and said f.uck it, lets just pick all my favourites

Honestly though I wish she stuck with the original idea, or maybe did a 'two discs' kind of approach. I feel like because of the split you're either a 'first half of the album and bonus tracks' lover or 'second half of the album' lover

The first song written for the album was VIY tho

She said that usually she goes back and reworks the songs at the end so they sound a bit more cohesive, but this time around she decided not to bother and just let them all stand on their own. With all the talk of dark poetry and hard beats and 'I'm your gothic aunt' and all the black hair and outfits and dark imagery I honestly think Mayhem had a different direction, then last minute she decided to write more songs and just did whatever

Her public comments directly contradict that theory tho. The first song she wrote was VIY and she confirmed that PC and CSTH were much later in the process. That being said, I do love the double LP idea and that’s my most delulu TOTAL MAYHEM fantasy.

VIY could have had a completely different sound, which would be amazing. She writes all her songs at the piano and so I'm sure the first version of it was similar to the Colbert performance.. and could have been going in a different direction.

To be a fly on the wall watching Gaga make an album would be a dream come true, she is so creative and inspired by so much that we can't ever really know how that process works

She specified that Watt was playing a 70s synth in the studio which inspired her to write VIY. Not saying it’s impossible it was completely different, but that detail suggests it being similar to the final version

I can’t name names, but key people has been benched and our contacts has been silent for since summer… Something happened in Miami, we don’t know what, but it was a strange turning point for us the mods.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
