Unpopular opinion maybe but I think the streaming and way social media has improved accessibility to fans makes these types of records less impressive (gaga included)... Whereas 15+ years ago it was more likely to be songs you heard on the radio that drew your attention. It seems easier to break a record or hit high numbers when you can have a whole base to reach out to and say "hey here is exactly when and where to go listen to this song, and where to buy the vinyl/cd"

I don't mean this as a hate post for anyone or any artist!

For me Adele still holds the record. Adele sold that much with only 1 (one) variant! Taylor breaking this record is nothing impressive

I really want to see how much she sells with just one single version of an album like how Adele did. Breaking this record with like 50 variants just feels like a huge scam

I think she could easily hit 800k or even 1m if the music was actually good, which is already massively impressive in today's music scene where the big names achieve 200/300k first week

the 3m is just so cringey knowing it was inflated with variants... she could actually earn some respect if she just had one version that reflected her true power

mother, what must i do?

Agreed, she sold 1M first week when she released 1989 (I think?) without variants, so she’s capable of breaking records without scamming her fans. Unfortunately, she knows her fans are too stupid to realize they’re being scammed, so she’ll continue doing it until they mature enough to see through her. Her ego and money/fame-hunger is far too strong for her to respect her fans right now. Maybe some day.

Adele had deluxe version with bonus tracks, she also did not make her album available on streaming services to boost sales, and this was also before Billboard limited the number of copies that could be purchased per person.

Speak Now (2010) was her first album to sell over 1M, "The Life of a Showgirl" is her 8th album to debut with over 1M.

That was a target exclusive version. And having one deluxe version beside the standard version is a whole different thing compared to 30 variants where u get the same songs but a different cover (or one different track for each variant. Like what?)

Taylor’s new record is just a laughable scam

That was a decade ago, and the way music is consumed has changed. Today's Taylor could sell 10M copies in 2015.

There were at least 32 physical and digital variants of Adele's album 25 released. This includes 27 physical formats (16 CD versions, 8 vinyl versions, 2 deluxe CDs with a clothing item, and 1 cassette) and 5 digital download editions.

Physical variants: 27 in total

CD: 16 versions

Vinyl: 8 versions

Deluxe CD: 2 versions, which included a clothing item

Cassette: 1 version

Digital variants: 5 digital download editions
