LordByron28 1,118
Listened to the album. Most of the tracks have some decent hooks. Definitely more curated experience than TTPD. It’s an album perfectly honed in on the style she has curated during her career with all of the emblematic traits. I think the backlash comes from the visuals and theme seemingly promising a different sound than just another Taylor Swift record. Also the subject matter she explores has all been done countless times over in previous albums. Some of it like the beef with Charli comes across contrived to try and find a celebrity drama to discuss for the album. It’s not bad and an easy listen but it also lacks evolution and artistic growth and is incredibly safe. I would’ve been happy and was expecting a really big pop album that may have had more of a loud sound that maybe just discussed her being engaged to a major league national football player, being a billionaire, traveling the world with the most successful tour and enjoying the fruits of her labor. Just something a little more happy, appreciative, celebratory instead of the same subject matter she has discussed for 15 years with the same sound. Also, if you are going to write a diss track, how about you start with the POTUS who most assuredly has said more nasty and hurtful things about you publicly than Charli XCX yet instead you write a track how you prefer hanging out with people who support a man that says all of those things to you. Don’t get me wrong I will return and continue listening to the album, the first four tracks are solid as well as some other standouts. Other than the unnecessary charli beef where she comes across on the wrong side of the coin. There’s nothing super wrong with the album. She’s always had cringe lyrics that’s part of her appeal. I guess she’s now discovered sexual innuendos now that Sabrina is big but that’s about it in terms of new content from her. Overall just incredibly safe in terms of subject matter and sound. I’d like to see her take some risks.

Taylor’s “Father Figure” is such a disappointment to me. You can barely recognize the sample, and overall the song is nowhere near the level of George Michael’s original. I kind of knew it would be a miss because the song is so iconic, and Taylor’s feminism is so biased, but it turned out even worse than I thought it would be. This album is worse than TTPD. I think it’s the first TS album I actually dislike.

Cancelled! also rubs me up the wrong way. Like girl, you're nearly 40. There was real maturity on Lover through to Midnights, this feels like a massive step back. She's the new Madonna, because like Madonna she thinks the entire world is against her when she's literally on the top. Really proves it gets lonely up there. I need her to take a break before the next album. The best songs are Eldest Daughter, Ruin the Friendship, Wood, Honey & The Life of a Showgirl. Her harmonies with Sabrina are amazing. Sabrina's soft vocals sound amazing on that track as well. The Fate of Ophelia isn't what I'd pick as the lead single tbh, should be the title track but she'd never lead with a duet. I wouldn't have pre-ordered a vinyl if she'd released any of these tracks in advance ngl. but she has already led with a duet... with mehehee (feat. brendo urie from panic at the disco!) It even got her her second #1 debut (or was it third?) Edited 1 hour ago by salty like sodium

She should just accept the fact that it’s Taylor’s one of weakest albums and move on. The problem is not with the audience. No matter what fandom, I hate that “omg you guys don’t get it you’re not satisfied with anything“ narrative.
