They're playing the old rule book where a shutdown always hurt the party in charge of congress. They think, as we're heading into primary season for the midterms it will help them in 2026. 

The reality is, as Trump and co have said, the Reps are going to use this shutdown to accelerate their destruction of the federal gov. And the Dems walked right into it

Polling shows most of the public blames Republicans. So, they’re not wrong.

They’re also saying they’re trying to protect people’s health premiums from skyrocketing.

Only time will tell how effective that messaging was.

Will be hard to say it worked when most people working for the fed get sacked after the shutdown.

Most will blame Republicans though. The shutdown doesn’t benefit anyone but it for sure will damage Republicans more. They could have passed a bill without the ACA premium changes but chose not to. That’s the real story.

I mean maybe, but it was avoidable is my point and in the current era - the public going "a plague on both houses" isn't unusual. 

If the Dems had fought the last time back in March, the administration wouldn't be in the strengthened position it is now. 

And they've just announced that federal layoffs are imminent....

This may work in the Democrats favour, I just think the rulebook has changed. Every previous one, the US has gone back to business as usual after - that is definitely not happening this time and on that basis I don't think we can rely on historical patterns of how voters respond to shutdowns.

I agree that Democratic leadership fumbled this in March. 

But I do think Trump and Republicans will bleed more from this.

Federal layoffs were wanted by the Trump admin and many will see it as an excuse they used. Many people are resigning from the federal workforce lately.

Apparently forecasts say the shutdown will last around 2 weeks, but we’ll see.

Honestly, I think this will be the most unpredictable shutdown we've ever seen. 
Because for the first time, the White House and the party in power almost don't want it to ever end...
