No shade but the fact all those releases that underperformed this year shows how much MAYHEM is doing strong commercially. 

Apart Taylor Swift, I trully don't see any other contender to MAYHEM this year in other female music releases.

It was obvious this was going to flop as Jealous Type didn't make any waves, which is surprising considering Doja has had one big hit every album and her last 2 lead singles smashed. I thought radio would be all geared up for new Doja music especially as they knew it was going to be pop, so this in addition to no new singles pre-album wasn't going to set her in good stead. I wouldn't be surprised if most people didn't even realise she had an album coming out. Releasing Cards as the next single might be her last chance to make it work, that's probably the next more commercial choice, though it'll probably be the SZA collab. It's such a shame as this is the first of her albums that I think is halfway decent. She's so talented but her entire bodies of work have never done it for me. Now she's actually made something I like and it's tanking. Typical.

Doja's singles have never been instant hits. Paint the Town Red took like 5 weeks to hit #1.  Jealous Type has only been out a month. I also feel like it's her least personally promoted album so far. In the past she'd promote a lot more on socials outside of the generic artist promo pics but I feel like this time around all she really posted was variants. She's also only had a month to rollout the album, when Scarlet was 6 weeks and Planet Her was 2 months. She increasingly back loads every release and every release is selling less it seems. Scarlet sold 72k first week, though she didn't have vinyls out for it until the deluxe came out. 

 

It almost feels like this is supposed to serve as more of a rebrand, and I wouldn't be surprised if the back loaded rollout leads up to a deluxe that's a little more "Doja".
