And they were totally capable of releasing their own digital variants to push sales just like she did. 

There was no rule and remains no rule that only Taylor Swift can exploit fans for chart metrics. 

But this nonsense about missing out on a momentum is laughable. A moment to celebrate what? Exploiting more fans by selling cheap quality plastic at a ridiculous mark up than everyone else that week?

There are many things we do not do not because there is a rule or not but because it is cheap, disgusting, unethical, cringe and embarassing to do so.

Taylor chose the cheap and embarrassing path. Fine, there is no rule she can't do that. In fact she got her #1 like that. Good for her. But that does not mean that we can't call her cheap, disgusting, unethical, cringe and embarassing tactic as the way it is. She opened that door with her decisions.

I totally agree with criticism of variants. 

I'm questioning why people only seem to complain about variants when it affects an artist they like because that artist (who also engages in the variant game) wasn't as successful with their marketing.

It shouldn't be relevant that the variant stopped another act, with multiple variants, from getting a worthless title that simply means they sold more overpriced plastic.

Criticism about vinyl variants are so boring. That stuffs doesn't effect anyone besides the fans who bought it. And they consented in buying those, not like any artists pressure them or guilt trip them to do it.
