Canada has just paused its 2025 mandate that 20% of all new car sales be EVs (the 2035 mandate is 100%) which will be reviewed.

Reasons come back to consumer demand of slower than anticipated adoption, high cost for consumers and unavailable infrastructure to charge with concerns a forced mandate will hurt auto competitiveness when the Nation isnt ready to go EV as a whole

Its kinda sad and unfortunate Canada wasnt prepared for the change and had to resort to this but Carneys move kinda makes sense in the now.

Too many ppl have living arrangements where they cant charge at home and the lack of available infrastructure in most of the Country excluding some of BC and Quebec makes owning an EV unrealistic for many. They should have built infrastructure faster but now it is what it is :madge:

I-

Trying to make EVs a thing before basic infrastructure can support the mass ownership of them is almost literally putting the cart before the horse.

Invest in a cleaner grid and the tech EVs need and keep that 2035 goal.

Meanwhile, China has become the largest EV market globally. It's had rapid adoption, and infrastructure support. It represents 2/3rds of global EV sales and half of all 2024 car sales were EVs. The majority of it's industry is domestic supply as well. European testing of Chinese EVs have given many top safety ratings, and the vehicles are cheaper than other models available.
And China's government is increasingly focusing on inovation within the industry. BYD claims it employs over 100,000 scientists and engineers. With concept to full factory roll out taking half as long as US car makers.

The major car brands we all know from America & Europe have been completely asleep at the wheel in this market. And have acted bizzarely against their long term viability by investing heavily in promoting anti-EV political groups. At this point the only thing keeping them safe is the divide between the western govs and the Chinese govs. If that thaws, domestic industries are ****ed in the US/Can/Europe

In that aspect Canada is pretty good. Most of our power is Hydroelectric and Nuclear and growth in Solar and wind as well

Fossil fuels still are some 20% of our power to fill gaps but at least its mostly natural gas not oil or coal which is worse

But on the charging infrastructure definitely, only 2 provinces are a bit more ahead in availability :toofunny:

This makes total sense. We were going to buy an electric car for our new car, but when we did some research about charging stations it just didn’t make any sense. And it’s not just charging stations but you need those super fast charging stations so you so have to wait for two hours in the middle of a road trip to charge up.  We didn’t think it made any sense right now and we hardly know anyone who has one.
