Candle in the wind? That seems so random to me. I know it’s a famous song but the biggest song ever? I’m confused lol

It became incredibly popular after Elton performed it at Princess Diana's funeral.

Surprised as well that Taylor or even Adele isnt here. I also think of Gangnam Style, Macarena, or like We are the World...

But... so happy for Gaga and Bruno!!!

The list does not represent most successful songs in history, when 4 songs are after 2020, 7 songs are after 2017 and the other 3 are from 90s with huge streaming numbers. There’s clearly a metric that causes shift and it’s streaming.

Yeah, streaming services means way more ppl can easily access it. So in recent years the potential market size has exploded and the size of population accessing these songs is WAY larger

Ur saying exactly what im saying. The only difference is you and I disagree whether it should count or not.

Like it or not, streaming has made music way easier to access and in any country. Total music consumption therefore has also risen

This chart doesnt surprise me one bit. It makes perfect sense actually.

Im not aruging against the fact that it was harder to sell the same number of units in the past as we measure it now. Im merely saying that whether a ditect comparison is fair or not, and whether its apples to oranges or not, either way, people can and do access more music today. So todays music has an advantage in total consumption

That's very cool but it also makes me wonder what it means to be "the most successful song in history." Like, what is success, how far back do we mean by 'history,' and what even counts as a song?

Just as a thought experiment, none of these songs are more recognizable than the happy birthday song, or twinkle twinkle little star, or a bunch of other songs that have probably never appeared on a chart anywhere (and presumably were written before radio broadcasting, let alone CDs or internet streaming).

And then there are songs that have at times (maybe even today) been pervasive like certain MJ or Madonna songs, or 'party' songs like the Cha Cha Slide or Cotton-Eyed Joe, that are more instantly recognizable to more people than some of the songs on this list.

I guess what I'm getting at is that this is more about commercial success in the modern era, not cultural success/penetration in all of music history.

That's not to minimize the accomplishment, cuz it's awesome. But it's kind of hyperbolic at the same time.

Ofc this is a global chart, based on radio and sales. DWAS is still #7 weekly and gaining 170k points. As long as it stays inside top 40 it will cumulate more points, and looks like it will stay there a long time.

What top 40 does this list take into consideration? Because DWAS could go recurrent and be out of the Hot100 in October when Taylor drops (hopefully not and Taylor only knocks A Bar Song out).

Didn't it spend over 7 months in BBhot100 top ten? Thats insane

there are 52 weeks in a 12-month period so it's almost a year!!

i think it was only 2 or 3 weeks that DWAS wasn't on the top 10 since it debuted in the chart

So Blinding lights will probably overtake Elton soon. Shame as I kind of want a pre-streaming track to stand the test of time on mostly pure sales.
