Canada to cancel US retaliatory tariffs

Canada will remove retaliatory tariffs on many U.S. products that are covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, Prime Minister Mark Carney said at a press conference on Friday.

The move by the Canadian prime minister is expected to reduce tensions with the U.S., as the two nations work to hash out a trade agreement. 

Reached for comment before the press conference, the White House said, "We welcome this move by Canada, which is long overdue," in a statement to CBS News.

This is tricky. This will please Maple Leaf MAGA, but this will also make MAGA (US) think that Trump is stronger than ever and can put down anyone. This is the exact rhetoric they used when China reduced tariffs earlier this year.

However, Canada will maintain its tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos, since the United States is continuing to target those industries with tariffs of its own.” -CBC

I think this is important to note. 

Tbf this is a reasonable response to rescend some retaliation to try and de-escalate. Yes the US has been a jerk with the tarrifs and BS reasons for them but for the most part they didnt tarrif USMCA compliant goods while Canada did in retaliation

 

I get Canada is pissed and rightfully so and we didnt make the first move... but still, putting tarrifs on goods under free trade deal maybe wasnt the best idea for immediate escalation.

 

I think Canada has been more harsh in response than EU, Japan and other advanced economies because our very close ties and history to the US made this feel very personal

 

To Europeans, Japan, Australia, Brazil etc they view it as an unfair business policy they have to resolve. Its more technical. For Canadians it didnt feel like a bad business deal to fix, it felt personal and insulting and backstabbing which is probably why Canada reacted one of the most harsh in retaliation excluding China
