I didnt know the reason for name change but i always took the "tricon" award as just essentially the same thing as vanguard award. Its 1 artist beibg selected for a special honour award to reflect on their career accomplishments

So random as always. They gave it to Katy last year and Nicki the one before so it’s not really something that amazing anymore. Gaga has been honored at the VMAs with the Tricon Award which is unique. 

They also had a “Most Iconic VMA performance” category last year and it’s fan voted and they gave it to Katy Perry when Gaga, Beyoncé, Taylor, Madonna , Eminem and Britney were nominated like it’s so obvious Katy has the weakest fanbase of all of them, just gave it to her because she attended.

It is really odd tho that Gaga made her name partly on bringing back the event music video with BR, Telephone, Paparazzi, and Alejandro and yet she has never received it. While Jlo and others have. I keep hearing people saying she refused it, but why on earth would any artist turn down a respected award and all the promo that comes with it. And why did they give her the increasingly made up seeming Tricon award that has forever disappeared.

Yayy obviously like very timely since her album is out next month but she really does deserve recognition for her music videos - a lot of people don’t know she directed some of her most iconic videos! 
She has so many amazing videos. Heartbreaker, honey, butterfly, obsessed, fantasy … so much more.

Tricon fiasco is sooo weird. My theory is they wanted to give her vanguard but she wasnt about to do a vanguard performance during covid, and / or she wanted to still do a long form performance so they needed a reason … i feel like the tricon award kinda reeks of a given/bought award though and imo she’s so above that
