Trump deploys National Guard in Washington DC

President Donald Trump on Monday placed the Washington, D.C., police department under federal control and deployed 800 National Guard troops in the capital city to address what he claimed was out-of-control crime there.

It is the first time that a president has federalized the Metropolitan Police Department. Trump’s move drew fierce condemnation from local officials, who noted that official statistics show crime in D.C. is on the decline.

“I’m announcing a historic action to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor, and worse,” Trump said at the start of a news conference at the White House,

“This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capitol back,” he said.

Of the roughly 800 National Guard members Trump ordered to D.C., about 100 to 200 will be aiding law enforcement at any given time for “administrative, logistics and physical presence,” NBC News reported.

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalbe called Trump’s actions “unprecedented, unnecessary, and unlawful,” and signaled his office will take action to challenge the administration.

“There is no crime emergency in the District of Columbia. Violent crime in DC reached historic 30-year lows last year, and is down another 26% so far this year,” Schwalbe said in an X post.

“We are considering all of our options and will do what is necessary to protect the rights and safety of District residents,” he said.

Whether this is the right decision or not, anyone who has spent any amount of time in D.C. knows that the violent crime problem in the city is real. I mean, the D.C. goverment routinely has to put "youth curfews" in place for entire stretches of the city.

Were you attacked or how did you experience the violent crime? Do you see the statistics that crime is literally at a 30 year LOW?

Did you read that crime has been down historically in DC? This is pretty much making it a Sundown Town — so that the administration can continue to police Black and brown bodies (as well as Trans and gender non conforming folks, and other marginalized communities at large).

I've been to DC like 70 times (as a kid, teenager, young adult, for work, as an old ass adult, etc.) and have never felt unsafe, but I try my best to think and act critically in big cities, rural towns, and when I read an article...

Maestro, play me your symphony; I will answer to anything. Take me on a trip,

Effectively a nothingburger move from him based on a false predicate, but his authoritarian impulses are still deeply unsettling.

Im just astonished that Trump is abusing so much of his power with little to no real reason for any of this actions other than he feels like it...

He acts like the white house and all of DC is his estate to do with as he pleases...wtf when is someone gonna step in and say enough?

I’ve been working in DC for years now and this is just false. I have never once had an issue with crime and I’ve been all over DC. Also went out pretty frequently including being out late at night and about all over. Most of my friends share the same experience.
