Georgia shares 2-Year report on 12th century monastery restoration

The Temporary Committee for Rehabilitation of Gelati presented its comprehensive activity report for the years 2023–2025 during an international conference held in Tbilisi.

This report outlined the progress and strategic developments undertaken for the preservation and restoration of the Gelati Monastery. 

Gelati Monastery, founded in 1106 by King David IV of Georgia, is one of the most important landmarks in the country. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has long been celebrated for its outstanding medieval architecture, vibrant mosaics, and role as a center of education and spiritual life during Georgia's Golden Age.

According to the note shared by the Ministry, the report features several key initiatives. These include the draft of an updated management plan for the Gelati Monastery, the temporary closure of the Gelati Notre Dame Church, and the ongoing construction of the cathedral.

Additionally, it covers the geological study of the monastery area, architectural conservation efforts, and specific work related to the wall paintings and mosaics of the Notre Dame Cathedral. All of these elements are contributing to a broader master plan for the site’s long-term preservation and development.
