I mean electoral registration absolutely should be done automatically. But no matter how its done there needs to be a system that matches the voter to a constituency. It's why people, especially in red states, are encouraged to continue checking if they're registered to vote. I've had to reregister before after being randomly booted despite voting in nearly every election (federal, state, and local) since 2016. Then when you show up to the polls you're told your registration isn't valid and you can't vote. You can imagine what type of voters are frequently affected by this. I get what you mean and the US certainly does have practices that are anti-voting and make it harder for poorer people and minorities to vote. I don't think registering in itself is bad as long as it is made easy and accessible and free for everyone. The reason is, the US is huge. You have to register where you are going to vote because if you are a Texan you can't just decide to vote in Oklahoma's elections, or if you're in one county in Texas, you can't just decide on the day to go vote in another county's election because you think their county election is more important--you have to vote where you live because the ballot will be different. Now when it comes to the presidential election, I'd support theoretically anyone voting anywhere (and they CAN do absentee or mail in in some states, although republicans are trying to get rid of that), but in the US states are responsible for their own elections, including the election of the president.
