Morphine Prince 109,655 Posted August 1, 2025 Share Posted August 1, 2025 (edited) SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — The party of El Salvador President Nayib Bukele approved constitutional changes in the country’s Legislative Assembly on Thursday that will allow indefinite presidential reelection and extend presidential terms to six years. Lawmaker Ana Figueroa from the New Ideas party had proposed the changes to five articles of the constitution. The proposal also included eliminating the second round of the election where the two top vote-getters from the first round face off. New Ideas and its allies in the Legislative Assembly quickly approved the proposals with the supermajority they hold. The vote passed with 57 in favor and three opposed. Bukele overwhelmingly won reelection last year despite a constitutional ban, after Supreme Court justices selected by his party ruled in 2021 to allow reelection to a second five-year term. The issue is the price is a right wing dictatorship. He will never let go of power now. He has violated and changed the constitution multiple times. El Salvador faced a choice. Safety and freedom at the cost of their rights or violence and despair with a broken system that didn’t work for them. I fear for the moment people don’t want him anymore, which eventually will come. He used cracking down on gang violence as a way of indefinitely suspending habeas corpus + the rule of law, locks up his political opponents without due process, runs a massive “counterterrorism” prison where people are regularly physically abused, raped, starved, or killed by prison guards, and is now, once again, using his executive monopoly to seize power indefinitely. I didn't connect the dots on counterterrorism prison and El Salvador. But I've never read these people's accounts of what happened to them. Keeping the lights on 24/7 is so inhumane. They dont see past all his violations- all they care about is that he is using religious ideology while perpetuating his actions.
