Does the UK arrest homeless agressively and force treatments?

If the answer is no, then the US has more homeless for other reasons. The extremely poor safety nets (by developed world standards) of the USA for the most disasantaged i think plays a role why so many homeless exist in some cities there

It boggles my mind how a Country that is consistently in the top 10 wealthiest per capita (sometimes top 5 in some years), manages to squander its wealth so badly that the poorest people cant have a decent life :toofunny:

The UK doesn't arrest homeless people (although I think the law allowing them to do so is still on the books) unless they commit another crime.
We also don't force them into substance abuse plans unless they've committed a crime - although some areas make getting access to social housing and other forms dependant on engaging with a substance abuse programme.
And while nowhere near perfect, and under constant threat, we do have signifcantly better safety net programmes than the US. So it is often the case that the people who make up the long term homeless population in England etc are people who for a number of reasons often actively avoid engaging with the system be it due to their mental health issues, negative experiences with other homeless people in shelters, substance issues (because even if forced onto treatment plans, an addict will relapse if they aren't ready to do the personal work recovery and sobriety needs) etc.

but I don't think we are in time to just "prevent" it, there should be long term solutions and protections for current and future homeless people.

Anyone can be a homeless one day, after losing their job, losing their home...

Like idk, we are bragging about $2 billion grossing concert, but these people can't even buy a slice of bread and now being treated like they are worst than murderers and rapists.

Why did you bring Biden up bro? Focus on the current administration!!!

why you gotta spread out the disappointment as if Biden had anything to do with this.

I literally asked Chat GPT and it pulled up so much information on what Biden has done for homeless Americans.

“President Biden—as chief executive starting in 2021—championed and signed sweeping legislation like ARPA, launched high-impact initiatives (House America, All In, ALL INside), increased federal funding for HUD/VA programs and rural housing, and implemented policy reforms benefiting veterans, youth, and LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing homelessness.”

And This is why a conversation with you will go no where. You clearly just want to live in your own bubble. I used a tool that can give precise information.

FACTS, that we could have discussed and mutually understand each other’s points. Yet you said Nah.

its cool though, just don't go around pretending like you know everything and when someone comes with Facts you Stonewall.

Did Trump Really Order Homeless People to Be Arrested Today?

As of now, Donald Trump is not the president, so he can’t “order” anything officially. If he said that homeless people should be arrested, it was likely a campaign proposal or comment made during a speech. He has previously expressed support for aggressive measures against homelessness, including clearing encampments and using police or federal action to remove people from the streets. If this is a recent campaign talking point, it’s part of his 2024 run and not a government order.

:Cautious:

Affordable housing wasn’t built fast enough.

Many cities saw rents skyrocket post-pandemic.

Mental health and addiction support remained underfunded and fragmented.

Local politics often blocked new shelter or housing plans — even in Democratic cities.

Republicans blocked larger housing reform bills in Congress.

Democrats failed to pass massive housing reform, especially once they lost the House in 2022.

So while Democrats tried, their efforts were:

Underfunded

Politically unpopular

Too slow

And outpaced by rising housing costs

Homelessness didn’t start with Trump.

We don’t need to be afraid to point out mistakes of dems, if we do then we’re not different than the republicans.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

I doubt any of the police force will be on board with this. The homeless population is rapidly growing and jail cells are constantly packed everyday with druggies. The courts are too overwhelmed and don’t want to deal with this issue, instead they always transfer homeless people to rehab/detox facilities.

unless trump makes a jail center just dedicated to homeless, arresting homeless people won’t solve the issue.

So which level of government are you criticizing? Put it all on Biden?

Immigrants already are not getting any due process and the constitution is being broken as we speak. I don’t think that is an issue for them.

Did y’all even read the order? I normally disagree with Trump but this is just common sense. I would be horrified if I was visiting an American city from Europe as I’m sure many tourists and visitors are. People on the left need to stop tip toeing around this issue and do something, even if it seems drastic. Many American neighborhoods are riddled with homelessness and it needs to be addressed. (And let me be clear, I support the actions targeted towards getting those with mental health conditions or drug abuse help, not just rounding up people who have fallen on hard times - which is not even what this executive order seeks to do). Did y’all actually read the order to see what it is going to do and how it is tailored to treat individuals that need help?

https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/executive-order-14321-ending-crime-and-disorder-americas-streets

Per the order: “Purpose and Policy: Endemic vagrancy, disorderly behavior, sudden confrontations, and violent attacks have made our cities unsafe. The overwhelming majority of these individuals are addicted to drugs, have a mental health condition, or both. Shifting homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings for humane treatment through the appropriate use of civil commitment will restore public order. Surrendering our cities and citizens to disorder and fear is neither compassionate to the homeless nor other citizens.

(i) seek, in appropriate cases, civil commitment of individuals with mental illness who pose risks to themselves or the public or are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves in appropriate facilities for appropriate periods of time; and

(ii) provide assistance to State and local governments, through technical guidance, grants, or other legally available means, for the identification, adoption, and implementation of maximally flexible civil commitment, institutional treatment, and "step-down" treatment standards that allow for the appropriate commitment and treatment of individuals with mental illness who pose a danger to others or are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves.

(iv) enforce, and where necessary, adopt, standards that address individuals who are a danger to themselves or others and suffer from serious mental illness or substance use disorder, or who are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves, through assisted outpatient treatment or by moving them into treatment centers or other appropriate facilities via civil commitment or other available means, to the maximum extent permitted by law.”

All of the provisions are seeking to provide these people with treatment, so stop it with the labor camp bs…

you really trust this government is going to do all that? :laughga:

there are some key words in there you need to take notice of: "in appropriate cases" and "other appropriate facilities" without telling you what their definition of appropriate is :yennefer:

and these are people who think drag queens reading story books to children is a sign of the end times :yennefer:

My point is that Biden focused on trying to pass legislation to help homeless people across America. All the ways in which things went wrong can surely be brought up. It fair to point out where certain things didn’t come to fruition. Its also ridiculous to blame biden for how local governments took on the mission.
SO were kidnapping immigrants

Arresting/Suppressing local legislators

Now were Arresting Homeless People

Drag Queens and Trans People are being targeted, (pretty soon they’ll all be arrested too)

BOSTON literally had to make an outcall for all Trans people letting them know they are a Sanctuary city for them…

Wow, we really are gonna have clean streets in rural Amurrica now. 🥹

Ignoring the ethical issues with the tool you are advocating for, chatGPT can give precise information - but often does not.

It is not capable of proper analytical behaviour to assess the material it regurgitates. In the field of politics, where almost everything is opinion based writing and biased, using chatGPT and assigning it complete trust for its accuracy is foolish.

This provision explicitly sets out how this EO can be used to indiscriminately imprison homeless people.

It explicitly sets out that people who are not at risk of harming themselves or others as a result of mental health or addiciton issues will be treated identically (living on the street and cant take care of themselves).

It then explicitly sets out that the provision used to take them off the street do not need to be treatment facilities.

It deliberately uses vague language to allow for open ended interpretation by the enforcers. And with SCOTUS' recent rulings designed to limit legal stay orders on presidential actions - any abuses carried out and defended under this vague wording will be harder to challenge in court.

Yeah, i definitely don't use it as an echo chamber. When it gives me answers I question even more what it is feeding me. I certainly understand that it is flawed in many ways so I don't freely trust it. Like I know I have reiterated the time line where living in, take into account that Im mostly fed what it thinks I want to know, I asked about criticism and failures on the democratic side of things. My point still stands. Biden did what he could for homeless Americans. Just like the points criticizing the roll out of his plans Stand as well.

(I may be gaslit by my AI but it tells me that I am not like most people. I have asked it about it being used as echo chambers for people and it has agreed with me but says it tries not to which I doubt it is successful in preventing. Yet it has told me that Im not the type of person to build and echo chamber. That I ask questions most people dont)

I always have my doubts about Ai. I feel it blows smoke up peoples a$$.
