Mirrion Rizzons 10,903
Spooky season has arrived early this year, and I've spent the last few weeks rewatching the conjuring movies ahead of Last rites, which will be out soon! The universe as a whole is super inconsistent, with some movies being genuinely terrible, but others being some of my favourite all time movies, as someone who loves supernatural horror. 9. The Curse of La Llorona I saw this in theatres once and I don't think I'd watch it again. It was fine I guess, I went with a bunch of my mates and just had a laugh. 4/10 8. Annabelle Again, I have no desire to watch this. I think I've seen it maybe twice? I think it's quite easy to tell that they just wanted to capitalise off the hype of the first movie, and so not much thought or care was given in creating a compelling/interesting story, or having nicely developed characters. Meh. 4/10 7. The Nun The AHS superfan in me was so excited when I found out Taissa would have the lead role in this movie, and I do enjoy it, but it definitely feels a bit pointless and just makes the whole Valak origin seem a little convoluted. If Valak was powerful enough to come back from hell 1048385 times and kill a bunch of nuns so easily, then why didn't it use any of these powers in TC2? I liked the tie in at the end with Frenchie, but again, the sequel just makes the origin story unnecessarily confusing. Although, I will give this movie props for the atmosphere and setting, the abbey is really creepy. 5/10 6. The Nun II I have only seen this once in theatres, but it was definitely an improvement over its predecessor, but again my biggest gripe with this movie is how frenchie ends up with ed and lorraine, and how lorraine managed to cast valak back to hell so easily when these two movies imply Valak is more powerful than that. 6/10 5. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It I appreciate this one for going in a different direction, with a human villain over the usual demon/spirit, as well as the more investigative approach they took. But I still wonder how differently it would have turned out if James Wan directed it instead of Michael Chaves. The movie has a great first and final act, but the middle kinda drags it down a bit, and it does lack some of the scares you'd expect from the franchise. Bonus points for Patrick and Vera though 7/10 4. Annabelle Comes Home Definitely the 'lightest' movie of the franchise - this one felt more like a teen scream movie, but it's probably the most fun out of all the movies. The premise is kinda dumb and the characters make some dumb decisions but the tension and pay off's worked really well in the end. The Ferryman is still one of the creepiest spirits I've seen in any horror movie. 8/10 3. Annabelle Creation Miles better than the original 2014 movie, this one ends up being one of the universes scariest movies. I think these movies thrive when they include characters that you actually root for, and annabelle creation does a great job of making us fear FOR the orphans. Plus, seeing actual consequences of the demon makes it so much scarier than some of the others, with both Mr & Mrs Mullins being killed off. 9/10 2. The Conjuring Watched this back in 2013 when I was 11, and I have never been more traumatised by a movie. Now that I'm older, I can still appreciate this movie just as much as back when it was released. While the premise and the sequencing of events is pretty cliche for the possession horror genre, it really is the James Wan effect that makes this movie so unsettling. I think he did a great job in taking predictable jumpscare moments and perfecting them using tension and dread, which begins from the very first scene all the way until the final exorcism scene. Even small touches like how the perron family are introduced with the shot of them pulling into the driveway from the POV of the house, as if they are already being watched is chefs kiss. Even to this day, I still think about my leg being pulled if I'm over the duvet, and when I'm up late, whenever I check the time it is always 3:07am. As I've said before, bonus points for Patrick and Vera, and also Lili Taylor - I feel like her performance in this movie is overshadowed by critics and the public as the former two got the spotlight, but she was amazing in her role. 10/10 1. The Conjuring 2 To be fair, depending on the day I might have the first movie above this one, but on my recent rewatch I think this one takes the cake. While the story isn't as focused as the original, I think it excels in offering something a little different, creating more of a mystery. The first movie feels a little more sequential - family arrives, they get haunted, investigators come in, finale. This one however, goes in a different direction with Ed and Lorraine wanting to believe the family, but because of the block on Lorraine's sight, the story ends up feeling more tense. I liked how they expanded on just the core family, and introduced Maurice and that annoying Skeptic woman, as it really highlighted the Hodgson's desperation and vulnerability, with no clear solution to their haunting. The performances, especially those of Janet and Peggy were phenomenal and really made the audience root for them. Wan's great cinematography continues with this one, and I loved the use of POV shots when Janet was being haunted, such as when she's under the bed with the torch, and when she's on the ceiling. I'm a little desensitised now, but the painting scene in theatres was so effective in creating so much tension, that when you think the pay off is going to happen, it instead continues to build dread, making the jumpscare feel explosive. 10/10 Edited Wednesday at 01:26 AM by Mirrion Rizzons 2

TC1 Won't bother ranking the other ones In my opinion it featured: English writings in a secluded Romanian monastery in the 50s; cheap jumpscares; ridiculous plot twists (the blood of Jesus... Come on) and things that you have seen a million times before; historical inaccuracy overall; Valak shown since the very beginning so the suspense went downhill. The cinematography and set designs are good tho, and I can see why the general public (I'm a very annoying cinephile when it comes to horror movies) likes it, since the format of shared universe linked to the other Conjuring movies is very popular and successful. I enjoyed the second one a bit more maybe because there were a couple of better ideas here and there

Horror movies never make that much sense. I suggest you watch the other Conjuring movies, which i recently rewatched, they're much worse than i remember and make even less sense. I actually found the 2nd one terribly boring and not scary at all. Huge disappointment Edited yesterday at 12:35 PM by SHALLOW
