Its so unfortunate. A role in a major movie could have been such a tailwind for her (and the way she had this era so planned out she was probably banking on it) and instead it turned out to be just bad press

 

All i can say is thankgod for DWAS. That huge hit helped shift the focus and the GP largely forgot about Joker 2 relatively quickly within a few months

 

Acting has its risks too. U can be very talented but your freedom of artistic expression is even more limited. The script and plot is written for you and your character and if you get a bad movie production your acting talent wont save it and you go down with it. Its a gamble, you put a lot of work into a part with no guarantee the rest of the team working on the movie will make it well.

The Dead Dance just achieved new peaks or re-peaks in Italy (#39), France (#43), Switzerland (#6), UK (#19), Germany (#6), Austria (#8), Norway (#4) and New Zealand (#21).

That's 8 peaks on AM.

It’s like this fanbase has collective amnesia sometimes. All of these were released at pivotal moments in her career; both PI and Disease were perfect choices, especially knowing how well Joanne set her up to smash with ASIB and MAYHEM sparked another career re-peak, despite coming off ARTPOP / Joker 2.

Joanne needed to be low-key and transitional to help fans / GP embrace her pivot into acting and other sub-genres. No song on Joanne was going #1 on Pop Radio; PI hinted at a change while not being a total 180, and was critically acclaimed with credible names like Ronson and Parker. Fans would’ve rioted over a ballad being a lead and it would’ve been seen as inauthentic. 

SL debuted #5 and reached #11 on Pop Radio; had they been able to promote it, it may have had more longevity. Alice or Babylon would’ve relied just as much on promo, which was impossible due to the worldwide pandemic that began 2 weeks later, and most importantly, a song like Replay would’ve been a disaster with its lyrics at the time.

Joanne was so important for her career in the long term, but she should have started it with Joanne the Song (best song on the album), Diamond Heart or Million Reasons

Disease is a GREAT song, but its not that easy of a listen that it should be a single

There was such a hunger for gaga music post joanne and ASIB slayage that if gaga had released something as eclectic and dynamic as babylon with a more polished presentation it would have gone viral or atleast carried for longer by pop audiences.

I mean, it wasn’t just DWAS. It was also choosing Disease as the lead, still releasing in October as promised, and only lightly promoting it through acoustic remixes which very simply and quietly kept the focus on her artistry as a musician. 

The “return to classic Gaga / recession pop banger” reception to Abracadabra in February would not have happened in the midst of all the Joker 2 discussion, or at all without the deliberate and successful planning between October and February.

Do you think they purposelly saved mpre promo for 2nd single than Disease in part for it to have more effect after GP forgot about Joker 2?
