Of course they do...we are in an era of weird indie pop with whisper artists, heavy 90s/00s sampling, mumble rap, and mumble Spanish rap, or random cringe tik tok music that is gone before you even remember to look up the song or even know the artist...

Music in general is extremely stale rn and great music is getting buried by mediocrity

Gaga should just release singles and MVs to fill the void.

I mean on the one hand, 2024 was stacked BUT at the same time, the alternative pop scene this year has been pretty good! New Lana album on the way, Lorde is back, Marina dropped an album, Addison rae’s album is really good too.

And of course MAYHEM :staymad:

This is the kind of music you hear a lot in the grocery store and the dentist's office.

...Which is exactly what happens with all mainstream music? I don't see their point.

The only song I know from that list is Beautiful things, and it's catchy, whether you like it or not, I understand why it's a hit.

why does this confirm for me that MAYHEM is the best pop album we've gotten this year lol

Hopefully this is good for her shot at AOTY 🙏🏼 if everyone else continues to release boring and uninspired music.

tbh quality of songs on the charts have been on a decline for yearsss, this is not news really (the pop trio from last year was just an exception after years of nothingness) which is why being an alt girlies fan never gets old because they never disappoint with high quality fun songs and there's always something and someone amazing to discover :iamfair:

It's not just pop. I'm really struggling to find any above average singles this year from anyone, even from the artists I like. Gaga really stands head and shoulders above everyone this year, I'd believe that if I weren't even a fan. Pop has been very safe and artists are relying on the same formulas with no attempt at innovation. Artists I would normally like have left me cold. Eras are way too short. I don't know how 2 consecutive years can be so radically different. This should be Gaga's cue to start putting out new singles and videos, the market's wide open right now and she's not taking her chance when there's not much competition.

I agree artists are afraid to be weird and experiment with music and are relying on nostalgia to cater to the true demographic of buyers of music...kids stream but the adults buy merch, go to the concerts, collect vinyls, etc...

No lies found, the music industry is probably at the worst it's ever been. It's such a snooze fest, half-assed songs that last 2:30, no music videos, max 2/3 singles, success relies only on TikTok, minimum promo and performances from artists, no risk taking, no creativity, always the same formula, charts are absolutely ****ed up and are no reflection of true hits... BOOOOOOOOOOOORING

I don't understand this take honestly. We're consuming the most music we've ever consumed as a society and individuals, with the most reach for independent artists. If you think last year was a big smash for music, and now you're bored, I hate to say you're partially part of the problem. Artists dont often release within a year of their previous work. If you can't make good music last a year with a small amount of supplemental content from other artists, your attention span is erroding and you get tired of the music too quickly. Streaming and easy accessibility to music killed the industry, even if it was pro-consumer in some ways.

The charts are dead. Bot farms on streaming, radio irrelevance and the slow death of nightclubbing killed them.

They bare little resemblance to the real world for most of us.

The charts killed themselves. You know Spotify can issue you a unique ID that they could use to track a stream to you and limit you at 1 stream to weaken streaming bots and mass listening. If Billboard threatened to throw out Spotify streams unless it complied with that, it would go a far way because you know Spotify would not want to lose access to remixes and other tools artists use to boost sales numbers. The issue is that Billboard makes rule changes when it wants, and it somehow never wants to when BTS or Beyonce or Taylor Swift are taking advantage of loopholes, only when it's less popular artists or artists getting smeared by the industry. It's part of why Nicki went off the deep end, and I don't blame her for that particular crashout. Billboard should have put a stop to this kind of thing in 2018 when Astroworld went #1 over Nicki's Queen purely because of its tour bundles that included meet and greet tickets for Kylie Jenner.

It's not artists though, it's labels. It's the work culture of the industry and the expectations of those businesses to make the most money with the smallest amount of investment.

I agree with this. especially about Pinkpantheress, she's having a big come up moment and is continuing to draw big crowds and MORE fans than her boy is a liar pt. 2 moment

Yeah, it kind of feels like this article is clickbait.

Not even a fan of Manchild or Alex Warren, but those songs have done very well. Pink Panthress is having a moment, and Gaga got a lot of positive press when Mayhem came out. While she didn't have a giant hit, Abra was a decent hit and has longitivity & her song with Bruno was massive (even if it came out last year).

We also have a lot of rap dominating the charts. IDK, this article gives me weird vibes, as it's ignoring that rap is doing very well right now. Last summer pop dominated somewhat; this summer, it's rap and Morgan Wallen.

Because Billboard is owned by the industry like all major charts are. The charts have always been rigged.

But now, more than ever in my lifetime, you can see the disconnect from reality.

For me personally im a bit burnt out by experimental/western sounding sonics, probably due to thrashing them back in late 2010s. :vegas:

Also tiktok has been both a blessing but also a curse to the music industry.
