The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET), led by rapporteur MEP Thomas Weitz (Greens/EFA), advanced the report on North Macedonia’s EU accession on June 24, 202. The draft originally included clear recognition of “Macedonian language and identity” as integral to the nation's heritage, constitutional order, and European values.

However, three MEPs proposed deleting those references through Amendments 21 and 22, arguing the wording was politically sensitive . Additionally, Bulgarian MEP Ivaylo Valchev submitted amendments (11–13) suggesting wording such as “contemporary Macedonian language and identity” to soften the language.

On July 3, 2025, three major political groups in the European Parliament (EPP, S&D, and Renew Europe) agreed to delete all mentions of “Macedonian identity and language” from the report draft  Bulgarian MEP Andrey Kovatchev confirmed this via social media, stating that the EPP-led coalition secured the removal of these sensitive references.

North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski sharply criticized these deletions. He likened the move to “Taliban-style” censorship and warned it could sow division in his country.

Meanwhile, critics noted the inclusion of concerns about a “Serbian world” geopolitical project seeking influence in North Macedonia, urging transparency around activities by Serbian-language outlets and Yugoslav-era security archives (UDBA/KOS) .
