The way she turned a dance song into a haunting ballad was magical! I love seeing new approaches to a familiar song. Like that BR rendition she did last year during Jazz & Piano? I literally cried! I hope she does a reinterpretation of VIY someday! I guess I don't necessarily find that as impressive because we've seen so many artists strip back pop songs into ballads live etc. (she's done it a hundred times before with the Edge of Glory, for example) that it's not as special anymore. Whereas when she was singing those old songs back then she actually improvised new melodies live and it made the songs get a new life of their own imo. Poker Face especially is notable for the whole "I'm marvellous, so marvellous, so marvellous" part that suddenly soars into this theatre-like bridge which is just mindblowing. I think the BR Jazz & Piano version was probably closer to what I'd like more of, but I'd need to relisten to it. I also don't think VIY would really be that drastically different on a piano so I can see her singing it but it also won't be as surprising as Abracadabra imo. With perfect celebrity she just sings the chorus lower because singing it live at that high pitch in acoustic is too awkward, but it's still the same melody. Tbf PF was the only one she sang with a new melody. We have forgotten our public MANNERS

But like "I'm you're biggest fan, I'll follow you until you love me" went from G#x5 - A# - Gx5 - G# - C - G# - F - G - F - G - C - G# to Gx6 - Ax6 - B - G - E - F# - E - F# - B - G (if I'm not mistaken). It's slightly pitched down already and instead of 5 notes, then a higher one, 5 lower ones, then another high one, she does 6 notes, 6 higher ones, and then another higher one. It was probably easier to sing that way so maybe she had a flu that day but it is enough of a change for me that my ear doesn't go "oh it's the exact same melody". EDIT: This is the specific live I'm talking about. She also pitches down the "promise I'll be kind" part, and then the "Baby you'll be famous" right after that is whispered and sung completely differently to the studio version, so for me this still feels like a reimagining. I’m the kind of fan that finds everything she does impressive, I can’t help it But I understand what you’re saying about improvising, even thought I don’t think she was really improvising, I feel like she has everything lined up before every performance. I think it was on Las Culturistas that she called herself a control freak? The marvelous part on PF is soooo good, it’s one of my favorites additions. As for VIY, I also don’t think it would sound so different, but a stripped piano version could add a dramatic touch to it that I think would go well with the song. 9 hours ago, salty like sodium said: I’ve never seen this video before and I loved what she did there! If she does a tiny desk con, i hope she's doing it alone...just her and the piano. Vote 4 Gaga: https://mtv.com/event/vma/vote
