Organizers of the Budapest Pride vowed to continue with the annual festival despite the new law and declaring: “We will fight this new fascist ban.” The mayor of Budapest, who's openly opposed to Orban's regime, showed support and announced that he's working with the organizers to pass the event as a protest, which made the police ban invalid under the rights of assembly. But the police ban remained in effect. Facial recognition was deployed to identify participants along the planned route of the parade. The use of drones was banned except for police surveillance ones (a big part of why you don't see air footage showing the real size of gatherings). Additionally, far-right groups received permits to hold counter-demonstrations at the same time, blocking a bridge that was part of the planned route. They did everything to scare us, and they failed. The crowd of around 200,000 people marched on, it was the largest pride in our history. It was an incredible experience to march in a crowd as large as 1/10th of the city. The pictures that exist don't do it justice. It was heartwarming to see how many people are willing to stand up for democracy and the protection of queer people. I finally see a slim hope of dismantling this 15 years old regime on our back! Like in the US, Republicans are a minority yet they currently control all three branches of government.
