summerboi 10 Posted June 28 Share Posted June 28 I feel like not having an opener is often a "mark of a Diva". Like you're so big, you can just drive ticket sales and praise just from yourself. It's also a strange position for huge artists, because if you were to select an artist to open, what would you do? If you select an medium-large artist with a large enough fanbase, those fans would probably get annoyed that they have to compete with a larger fanbase for tickets. Pick a really small artist, and you risk the awkwardness of the audience just not caring. Taylor Swift seems to figure out the magic formula for openers, but she's far more active touring and promoting than a lot of other pop stars, and her fandom is a bit different culturally. I liked what MCR did for their upcoming tour, and had an array of absolute wildcard openers for each city. Gaga having international artists (before they were super accessible globally) for ArtRave was also fun. For Madonna's Madame X tour she had a small Fado band preforms covers of her own songs, which was pretty Diva, but also a courtesy considering the her notorious start times... Having a DJ is honestly a decent option. I'd rather have Lady Starlight again for variety and novelty, than hear the same playlist loop a few times.
